Text: Romans 13:11-14
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Practical Implications: Shine the Light
Memory verse: Philippians 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. The light of God is not only for personal holiness but also for public witness. To shine the light means to live in such a way that Christ is visible through you.
When we walk in God’s light, it naturally radiates outward. Light cannot be hidden; it exposes darkness and attracts attention. Then you become a beacon in a world covered in deception, compromise, and despair. Shining the light is not about self-exaltation but about pointing people to Jesus, the true Light of the world John 8:12.
Practically, shining the light involves acts of love, integrity, kindness, generosity, and consistent godly character. It is refusing to conform to the patterns of the world but instead demonstrating the transforming power of Christ. Whether in business, family, school, or community, the believer’s life becomes a testimony that brings glory to God.
Shining the light also includes boldly sharing the gospel. Silence in the face of spiritual darkness allows the enemy to advance, but speaking the truth in love pushes back the shadows. Even when persecution comes, the light must shine brighter, because darkness can never overcome it John 1:5.
Shining the light is a responsibility. You are a steward of God’s glory on earth. To hide your light under fear, compromise, or apathy is to betray the very purpose for which God saved you. You are strategically placed in your family, workplace, and community to reflect Christ. Shining the light means becoming a living example of Christ’s love and truth in a broken world. As you shine, others are drawn to God, and He receives the glory.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 27: SS&S 173 THERE’S A LIGHT THAT IS SHINING IN DARKNESS
- There’s a light that is shining in darkness,
While we wait for the dawning of day;
And it cheers us along on our journey,
Till the shadows shall vanish away !
- So we’ll wait and watch for the dawning,
The day of eternity blest;
Then take the wings of the morning,
And fly away to our rest.
- From the sure word the prophets
have spoken, [the gloom;
There is light flashing forth through
For the Scripture can never be broken,
And the King in His glory will come.
- Now we sing ‘mid the darkness and shadows, ;
And we pray and we watch for the dawn
Till the Day-star, in glory arising,
Shall betoken the coming of morn.

- We are not of the night nor of darkness,
Let us walk, then, as children of day;
Our weeping shall be for a moment,
And our joy shall ne’er vanish away !
