PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Resist Darkness

Why Does God Need Your Heart? To Relate with You

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Resist Darkness

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:5–6

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Resist Darkness

Memory verse: Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Light and darkness cannot mix. As children of light, we are called to resist sin, fear, compromise, and deception. Choosing holiness is choosing to walk fully in God’s light, while entertaining darkness slowly pulls us away from His presence. In a room lit by a bright lamp. If you open the door to darkness, the darkness does not overpower the room, the light does. But if you begin dimming the lamp little by little, eventually the room grows shadowy until darkness settles in. That’s what happens spiritually when we tolerate “small sins” or compromise, our light weakens, and darkness creeps in.

Resisting darkness means closing every door that gives Satan access. It means rejecting fear when it knocks, refusing temptation when it whispers, and standing firm in truth when deception tries to cover our eyes. Light always wins, but only if we keep the lamp burning strong through God’s Word, prayer, and obedience. The victory is in making consistent choices to stay in God’s light, because even the smallest light drives away great darkness.

The call to walk in the light also requires a deliberate rejection of darkness. The Scripture makes it clear that light and darkness cannot mix. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” This is separation from sin, compromise, and ungodly influences.

Darkness in the Bible represents sin, deception, fear, and rebellion against God. When you flirt with sin, they dim your light and give the enemy access to operate in your life. Resisting darkness means you must say “no” to hidden sins, worldly compromises, and any practices that quench the fire of the Spirit. It also means rejecting fear, because fear is a weapon of darkness that keeps many from walking in truth and boldness.

To resist darkness, we must live a life of vigilance and holiness. Ephesians 5:11 instructs us: “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness but rather expose them.” This requires courage to take a stand for Christ even when it is unpopular, refusing to compromise God’s standards for temporary gain.

Furthermore, resisting darkness is not just about avoidance. it is about active confrontation. You resist through prayer, declaring God’s Word, and applying the blood of Jesus against every form of oppression. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Victory comes when we remain submitted to God while rejecting every invitation to sin. The more you resist darkness, the brighter your light shines. Your life then becomes a testimony of God’s power, drawing others from the grip of darkness into His marvellous light.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

  1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

  1. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

  1. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey

  1. But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey

  1. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
