PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Living as Children of Light

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Living as Children of Light

Text: Matthew 5:14–16

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Living as Children of Light

Memory verse: Romans 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

In Ephesians 5:8 Apostle Paul said, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Salvation is more than forgiveness; it is a total transfer from one kingdom to another: from darkness to light.

If you place a candle in a dark room. As long as the candle remains unlit, the darkness dominates the room. But the moment the flame is lit, the entire atmosphere changes. Even one small flame makes darkness retreat. In the same way, you are like that candle, when Christ lights your life, you are no longer hidden in darkness but become carriers of His glory.

Living as children of light means walking daily with this awareness. Our words, choices, and actions must shine in such a way that people see Christ in us. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

It also means refusing to compromise. A candle cannot shine if it is covered by a bowl. Many Christians dim their light by mixing it with sin, fear, or hypocrisy. To truly shine, we must remove anything that hides Christ’s glory in us.

Being children of light also carries responsibility. Just as streetlights guide travellers at night and prevent accidents, your life should guide others out of confusion and into God’s truth. Your life in the light makes you a signpost for Jesus.

The more you remain in God’s Word and fellowship with His Spirit, the brighter your light shines in a dark world. Darkness can never overpower true light.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

  1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

  1. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

  1. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey

  1. But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey

  1. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
