Text: Hebrews 3:7–8
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
IGNORING CONVICTION
Memory Verse: Proverbs 29:1 “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”
“Do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15. Conviction is the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit reminding us of God’s standard and pulling us away from danger. It is God’s alarm system for the soul. But when you continually ignore that conviction, you silence the Spirit’s warning and harden your heart.
At first, sin stings the conscience. You feel the guilt, restlessness, or unease. But if ignored repeatedly, the heart becomes desensitized, what was once painful becomes normal. Apostle Paul describes such people as those whose consciences are “seared as with a hot iron”1 Timothy 4:2.
It is like snoozing an alarm clock every morning. At first, it rings loudly. But the more you silence it, the easier it is to oversleep and miss the day’s purpose. In the same way, ignoring conviction dulls spiritual alertness until sin becomes comfortable.
The danger of ignoring conviction is that it leads to deeper bondage. God’s Spirit strives with us to bring repentance Genesis 6:3, but when resisted, it leaves the soul vulnerable to deception, pride, and eventual destruction.
King David listened to conviction when confronted by Nathan and found mercy 2 Samuel 12. But Pharaoh ignored conviction through ten plagues, and it ended in his destruction Exodus 14.
- Conviction is God’s rescue rope.
- Ignoring it is cutting the rope.
Responding to it brings restoration and freedom.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 87 “REDEEMED FROM CHAINS OF DARKNESS” By Apostle James Abache
- From the depths of darkest night,
Where the shadows hide the light,
I was bound in chains of fear,
Held by powers far and near.
But my Savior heard my cry,
Spoke His name and set me free.
Now in His grace, I rise and stand,
Redeemed by His mighty hand.
Refrain:
I am free, I am free,
By His blood, delivered me!
No more chains, no more strife,
I am saved, and restored to life.
Hallelujah, praise the King,
From the pit, He’s called me out to sing!
- Satan’s whispers lost their power,
In the light of that great hour,
When the Lord’s voice called me whole,
Restoring peace unto my soul.
No more torment, no more night,
I am free in His great light.
He has broken every chain,
Nevermore to be enslaved!
Bridge:
In His name, the demons flee,
At His feet, I find my peace.
Victory, forever mine,
In the blood of Christ divine!
- Now I walk in freedom’s light,
With my Savior by my side,
For the One who freed my soul,
Now leads me to a life made whole.
I’ll forever praise His name,
For He broke the devil’s claim,
And forever I will sing,
Of the One who is my King.
Today’s Prayer
- Lord, soften my heart and help me never to ignore the gentle voice of Your Spirit. Keep my conscience alive and sensitive in Jesus’ name.
- Father, deliver me from every hardness of heart. Remove every veil of pride and deception that make me resist conviction. Help me walk in humble obedience daily.
3. Lord, have mercy on those ignoring Your call to repentance. Open their eyes, pierce their hearts with the truth, and bring them back to Your light before it is too late.
