SPIRITUAL LAZINESS

SPIRITUAL LAZINESS

Text: 2 Peter 1:5-10

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

SPIRITUAL LAZINESS

Memory Verses: Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Spiritual laziness is one of the subtle dangers that weakens you from within. It is not always obvious, but it creeps in when you neglect prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and obedience, slowly drifting away from God’s presence. The enemy thrives in such idleness, planting temptations and distractions. Proverbs 24:33–34 warns: “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” This principle applies spiritually; negligence invites poverty of the soul.

The danger of Spiritual laziness is that it does not reveal its effects immediately. Instead, it gradually erodes spiritual strength, leaving the believer vulnerable to attacks and compromises. A spiritually lazy Christian often finds excuses for not praying, skipping Scripture reading, or neglecting church fellowship, yet has time for endless entertainment, idle talk, or worldly pleasures. This misplaced priority creates a vacuum in the spirit that darkness quickly fills.

Jesus gave a strong warning in Matthew 26:41: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Laziness feeds the weakness of the flesh, reducing sensitivity to the Spirit and making temptation more appealing.

Spiritual laziness is more than mere weakness, it is a silent killer of spiritual fire. A lazy Christian cannot sustain holiness, discernment, or power. Without discipline in prayer and the Word, the lamp of the spirit begins to dim. When the lamp grows dim, darkness takes over, leading to compromise, defeat, and even loss of God’s presence.

The cure for spiritual laziness is discipline. Just as physical muscles grow through consistent exercise, spiritual strength grows through daily habits of prayer, meditation, and obedience. Staying alert and intentional in spiritual practices keeps the fire burning and ensures victory over temptation.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 87 “REDEEMED FROM CHAINS OF DARKNESS” By Apostle James Abache

  1. From the depths of darkest night,

Where the shadows hide the light,

I was bound in chains of fear,

Held by powers far and near.

But my Savior heard my cry,

Spoke His name and set me free.

Now in His grace, I rise and stand,

Redeemed by His mighty hand.

Refrain:

I am free, I am free,

By His blood, delivered me!

No more chains, no more strife,

I am saved, and restored to life.

Hallelujah, praise the King,

From the pit, He’s called me out to sing!

  1. Satan’s whispers lost their power,

In the light of that great hour,

When the Lord’s voice called me whole,

Restoring peace unto my soul.

No more torment, no more night,

I am free in His great light.

He has broken every chain,

Nevermore to be enslaved!

Bridge:

In His name, the demons flee,

At His feet, I find my peace.

Victory, forever mine,

In the blood of Christ divine!

  1. Now I walk in freedom’s light,

With my Savior by my side,

For the One who freed my soul,

Now leads me to a life made whole.

I’ll forever praise His name,

For He broke the devil’s claim,

And forever I will sing,

Of the One who is my King.

Today’s Prayer

  1. Lord, set my spirit on fire again. Deliver me from every spirit of slumber, indifference, and laziness in Jesus’ name.
  2. Father, stir in me a hunger for prayer, Your Word, and fellowship. Let me not grow weary but abound in Your strength daily.
  3. Oh Lord, revive every spiritually weak believer around me. Break the yoke of laziness and set their hearts ablaze with passion for You.
