Bible Text: Luke 12:13–21
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Memory Verse:
Luke 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
A person drinking salty water becomes thirstier instead of satisfied. The more they drink, the worse their condition becomes. Covetousness never satisfies the heart. The more a person acquires, the more they crave, creating a cycle of endless desire without true fulfillment.
A covetous heart is driven by an insatiable desire for more possessions, more status, more recognition. It shifts focus from God to material things, making possessions a substitute for purpose and fulfillment. In Luke 12:13–21, Jesus warned against this through the parable of the rich fool, who stored up wealth but neglected his soul. His life reveals the danger of valuing accumulation over relationship with God.
Covetousness is subtle. It often disguises itself as ambition or progress, but at its core, it is misplaced trust. Instead of depending on God as the source, the covetous heart depends on what it can acquire. This leads to anxiety, comparison, and dissatisfaction because material things cannot meet spiritual needs.
A covetous heart also robs a person of gratitude. Instead of appreciating what God has provided, it constantly looks at what is lacking. This creates restlessness and discontentment, even in seasons of abundance. True satisfaction comes from God alone. When the heart is anchored in Him, it finds peace regardless of circumstances. Contentment does not mean lack of desire for growth, but it means trusting God as the ultimate provider and source of fulfillment.
Generosity is a powerful antidote to covetousness. When you give freely, you break the hold of greed and reorients the heart toward God. A heart that trusts God will not cling tightly to possessions but will use them as tools for His purpose. A covetous heart must therefore be guarded carefully. If left unchecked, it leads to spiritual emptiness, but when surrendered to God, it is replaced with contentment, gratitude, and peace.
Action Plans
- Practice daily gratitude, focusing on what God has provided rather than what is lacking.
- Give consistently and cheerfully to break the grip of greed and selfishness.
- Set your priorities on eternal values rather than temporary material possessions.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 23: SS&S 319: WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
what peace we often forfeit,
what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge–
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.
