Bible Text: James 1:22–24
But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;
for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
Memory Verse:
Matthew 7:3 “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”
You may clean only the visible parts of a house while ignoring hidden dirt elsewhere. Selective spiritual blindness causes people to acknowledge certain truths while avoiding areas requiring repentance, correction, and personal transformation. Selective blindness starts when you recognize truth in some areas yet ignores truths requiring personal change or sacrifice. Such individuals may understand certain biblical principles while deliberately avoiding correction concerning attitudes, habits, addictions or behaviors they do not want to confront. The Bible warns us not to deceive ourselves by hearing God’s Word without obeying it fully. Selective blindness often develops when people choose convenience over complete obedience. They may willingly accept teachings about blessings, success, or encouragement while rejecting truths about repentance, holiness, forgiveness, humility, or sacrifice.
This condition is dangerous because it creates spiritual inconsistency and self-deception. A selectively blind person may criticize others while remaining blind to personal weaknesses and sinful attitudes. Pride often contributes to this condition by preventing honest self-examination and repentance. Selective blindness also weakens spiritual growth and discernment. When you ignore areas needing change, spiritual sensitivity decreases gradually. Over time, disobedience becomes easier to justify, and the heart grows resistant to correction from God’s Word and the Holy Spirit. Jesus frequently confronted religious leaders who appeared spiritually knowledgeable outwardly but ignored truths exposing their own hearts. They recognized certain aspects of God’s law while rejecting repentance and humility. Their selective blindness prevented them from fully receiving God’s truth and transformation.
However, God desires believers to walk in complete truth and obedience. Genuine spiritual maturity requires willingness to surrender every area of life to God. Through humility, prayer, honest self-examination, and obedience to Scripture, selective blindness can be removed. The Holy Spirit faithfully reveals hidden attitudes and areas requiring transformation. We must respond quickly whenever God exposes weaknesses or sinful behaviours. A teachable and surrendered heart experiences continual growth and spiritual clarity.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 28: SS&S 190: COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME
Let Thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.
Convince us of our sin,
Then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.
‘Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole.
Dwell therefore in our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free ;
Then we shall know, and praise, and love
The Father, Son, and Thee !
