Bible Text: Matthew 23:27–28
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Memory Verse:
2 Timothy 3:5 “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
A beautifully wrapped empty box may appear valuable outwardly but contains nothing inside. Religious blindness focuses on outward spirituality and appearance while lacking genuine relationship, revelation, and inward transformation from God. Religious blindness is a dangerous dimension of spiritual blindness where people appear spiritual outwardly but lack genuine inward revelation and relationship with God. Such people may practice religious activities faithfully while remaining spiritually empty, unchanged, and disconnected from true fellowship with God. Jesus strongly rebuked the Pharisees because they focused heavily on outward appearance while neglecting inward purity and obedience. They appeared righteous publicly, yet their hearts were filled with pride, hypocrisy, and spiritual blindness. Religious blindness often hides behind rituals, traditions, titles, and external performances without true spiritual transformation.
A religiously blind person may attend church regularly, pray publicly, quote Scriptures, or participate in spiritual activities while lacking genuine intimacy with God. Outward religion becomes more important than inward holiness, humility, obedience, and spiritual growth. Such individuals often value human recognition more than pleasing God sincerely. Religious blindness is dangerous because it creates false confidence. People may assume they are spiritually healthy simply because they appear religious externally. However, outward spirituality without inward revelation cannot produce genuine transformation, spiritual maturity, or true righteousness. Pride, hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and dependence upon religious performance contribute greatly to this condition. Religious blindness also makes people resistant to correction because they believe external activities alone prove spiritual maturity.
Jesus consistently emphasized the condition of the heart rather than outward appearance alone. God desires sincere worship, genuine obedience, humility, and personal relationship with Him. True spirituality begins inwardly and produces outward transformation naturally. We must therefore guard against becoming spiritually routine without genuine intimacy with God. Prayer, worship, Scripture study, and service should flow from sincere love for God rather than religious obligation or public recognition. The Holy Spirit brings inward transformation and reveals areas requiring repentance and growth continually. Through humility and genuine surrender, you develop authentic spiritual life grounded in truth and relationship with Christ.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 28: SS&S 190: COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME
Let Thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.
Convince us of our sin,
Then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.
‘Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole.
Dwell therefore in our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free ;
Then we shall know, and praise, and love
The Father, Son, and Thee !
