CONSEQUENCES OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS: Spiritual Stagnation

CONSEQUENCES OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS: Spiritual Stagnation

Bible Text: Hebrews 5:12–14

12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Memory Verse:

2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

A tree without water remains alive temporarily but stops growing and producing fruits. Spiritual blindness causes believers to become spiritually stagnant, preventing growth, maturity, fruitfulness, and deeper fellowship with God. Spiritual stagnation is a serious consequence of spiritual blindness. God desires believers to grow in faith, wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual maturity. However, when spiritual blindness affects the heart, growth becomes limited and spiritual progress slows greatly. The Bible explains that some believers remain spiritually immature because they fail to develop deeper understanding and discernment. Instead of growing stronger spiritually, stagnant believers remain weak, unstable, and unable to handle greater spiritual responsibilities. Spiritual blindness prevents them from recognizing areas needing growth and transformation.

A spiritually stagnant believer often loses passion for prayer, worship, Scripture study, and fellowship with God. Spiritual routines may continue outwardly, yet inward growth becomes minimal. Without spiritual hunger and sensitivity, you will remain spiritually inactive and unfruitful. Sin, pride, complacency, distractions, and neglect of God’s Word commonly contribute to stagnation. When you stop pursuing spiritual growth intentionally, you become comfortable remaining at the same level spiritually. Over time, discernment weakens, faith decreases, and spiritual strength becomes limited. Spiritual stagnation also affects effectiveness in God’s kingdom. A stagnant believer struggles to influence others positively or fulfill divine assignments faithfully. Lack of spiritual growth often produces frustration, confusion, and weakness during challenges and temptations.

However, God desires restoration and spiritual growth for every believer. Through repentance, prayer, studying the Scripture, obedience, and consistent fellowship with the Holy Spirit, spiritual vitality can be renewed. God strengthens believers who sincerely pursue maturity and deeper understanding. Jesus taught His disciples so they could mature spiritually and fulfill God’s purpose effectively. You must intentionally pursue growth and avoid complacency. A spiritually growing believer becomes stronger, wiser, fruitful, and more sensitive to God’s direction.

Action Plans

  • Maintain consistent prayer, worship, Bible study, obedience, and spiritual fellowship.
  • Avoid complacency by intentionally pursuing spiritual growth, maturity, wisdom, and discernment.
  • Repent quickly from distractions limiting spiritual development, passion, fruitfulness, and godly effectiveness.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey

But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
