Bible Text: 1 Timothy 4:1–2
But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,
through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;
Memory Verse:
Ephesians 4:18–19 “Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”
A hand repeatedly exposed to intense heat gradually loses sensitivity and no longer reacts quickly to pain. A conscience repeatedly ignoring conviction becomes spiritually hardened, reducing sensitivity to sin, truth, and God’s correction over time. A hardened conscience deepens spiritual blindness because repeated rejection of conviction gradually destroys spiritual sensitivity. God has given every person a conscience to help recognize right and wrong. However, when conviction is ignored, the conscience becomes hardened and less responsive to truth. The Bible describes this condition as having a conscience “seared with a hot iron.” Just as burned skin may lose sensitivity, a hardened conscience loses its ability to respond properly to spiritual conviction. Sin that once produced guilt gradually begins to feel normal and acceptable.
One major result of a hardened conscience is that wrong becomes normal. People that are repeatedly exposed to sinful attitudes, behaviours, or compromise without repentance eventually stop recognizing their seriousness. Actions once clearly understood as wrong may become justified, tolerated, or defended openly. Truth also begins feeling uncomfortable. Spiritually blind people often resist sermons, correction, or biblical teachings confronting sinful behaviour. Instead of welcoming truth, they avoid conviction because hardened hearts prefer comfort over transformation. Another dangerous result is that sin become acceptable. The conscience no longer reacts strongly against compromise, disobedience, or spiritual decline. As spiritual sensitivity weakens, discernment decreases and darkness deepens. A hardened conscience develops progressively through persistent sin, compromise, rebellion, pride, and continual neglect of God’s voice. Every ignored conviction weakens spiritual responsiveness further. Without repentance, spiritual blindness increases steadily.
However, God’s mercy remains available to restore spiritual sensitivity. Through sincere repentance, humility, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word, hardened consciences can become tender again. The Holy Spirit convicts hearts lovingly and leads believers back toward truth and righteousness. We must therefore respond quickly whenever God convicts or corrects. Maintaining a sensitive conscience is essential for spiritual growth, discernment, and fellowship with God. Jesus lived in perfect obedience and remained fully sensitive to the Father’s will. We should follow His example by guarding our hearts carefully and refusing to tolerate compromise.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 26: SS&S 1149: GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD,
Look upon a little child ;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.
Fain I would to Thee be brought;
Blessed Lord, forbid it not ;
In the Kingdom of Thy grace
Give a little child a place.
Lamb of God, I look to Thee ;
Thou shalt my example be ;
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild ;
Thou wast once a little child.
Fain I would be as Thou art ;
Give me Thy obedient heart ;
Thou art pitiful and kind,
Let me have Thy loving mind.
Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
In Thy gracious hands I am ;
Make me, Saviour, what Thou art,
Live Thyself within my heart.
