Bible Text: 1 Kings 3:9–12
Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours?”
This request pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have you asked for riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice;
behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and understanding heart; so that there has been no one like you before you, and after you none will arise like you.
Memory Verse:
Proverbs 2:2 “So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding.”
A radio receives clear sound only when properly tuned to the correct frequency. A listening heart receives and interprets God’s truth accurately because it remains attentive, sensitive, and aligned with His voice. A listening heart interprets spiritual light correctly because it does not merely hear words outwardly; it seeks genuine understanding and responds with obedience. Many people hear sermons, read Scriptures, and receive counsel regularly, yet fail to apply truth properly because the heart is not truly listening. King Solomon demonstrated the importance of a listening and understanding heart when he asked God for wisdom and discernment. Instead of seeking personal gain, Solomon desired the ability to understand correctly and judge wisely. God honoured this request by giving him wisdom, discernment, and understanding beyond others. A listening heart remains attentive to God’s voice through Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. Such believers do not rush ahead carelessly or depend entirely upon emotions and human reasoning. Instead, they seek divine understanding before making decisions and responding to situations.
One major result of a listening heart is discernment. Spiritually attentive believers recognize truth more clearly and identify deception more quickly. Discernment protects you from confusion, wrong influences, and poor spiritual judgment. Wisdom is another result of a listening heart. Those who listen carefully to God gain understanding for life’s challenges, relationships, and responsibilities. God’s wisdom helps believers respond correctly and walk according to His will faithfully. A listening heart also produces accuracy in decisions. Many wrong decisions occur because people act impulsively without seeking God sincerely. However, believers who listen carefully to God’s direction receive clarity and spiritual guidance for important choices.
Listening requires humility, patience, and spiritual sensitivity. A proud or distracted heart struggles to hear God clearly. You must therefore quiet distractions and remain attentive through prayer, worship, and meditation upon God’s Word. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand spiritual truth accurately and apply it wisely. As you develop a listening heart, spiritual maturity and discernment increase.
Jesus listened to the Father and acted according to divine instruction perfectly. You should follow His example by remaining spiritually attentive and obedient.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 26: SS&S 1149: GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD,
Look upon a little child ;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.
Fain I would to Thee be brought;
Blessed Lord, forbid it not ;
In the Kingdom of Thy grace
Give a little child a place.
Lamb of God, I look to Thee ;
Thou shalt my example be ;
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild ;
Thou wast once a little child.
Fain I would be as Thou art ;
Give me Thy obedient heart ;
Thou art pitiful and kind,
Let me have Thy loving mind.
Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
In Thy gracious hands I am ;
Make me, Saviour, what Thou art,
Live Thyself within my heart.
