Bible Text: Joshua 1:7–9
7 Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.
9 Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
For a traveller attempting to navigate a dense forest at night without a flashlight or a map, every step becomes uncertain. Hidden obstacles cause repeated falls, wrong turns lead farther from the destination, and fear replaces confidence. The problem is not the journey but the absence of light. God’s Word is the believer’s spiritual light. When we neglect it, we begin to make decisions in darkness, becoming vulnerable to deception, temptation, and unnecessary failure. The Word of God is more than a sacred book; it is God’s living voice to His people. It reveals His character, His will, His promises, and His principles for victorious living. Every spiritual revival recorded in the Scripture was preceded by a renewed commitment to God’s Word. Every season of spiritual decline has been marked by neglect of divine truth.
When God commissioned Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land, He gave him one primary instruction: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…” God did not attribute Joshua’s future success to military strength, intelligence, or experience, but to his continual meditation upon and obedience to the Scriptures. Prosperity and success were connected to God’s Word, not human ability. Neglecting God’s Word comes at a tremendous cost. A believer without regular exposure to the Scripture gradually loses spiritual sensitivity and discernment. Wrong begins to appear right, and truth becomes difficult to recognize. Temptation becomes stronger because the heart lacks the truth needed to resist it. Jesus defeated every temptation in the wilderness by declaring, “It is written.” He demonstrated that victory over Satan, that victory is secured through the authority of God’s Word.
Neglect of Scripture also weakens faith. Romans 10:17 declares, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” A believer who rarely reads or meditates on God’s Word soon finds fear replacing faith, anxiety replacing peace, and doubt replacing confidence. Without the nourishment of the Scripture, spiritual growth becomes impossible, just as a body cannot survive without food. Throughout history, people and nations that abandoned God’s Word suffered spiritual decline. King Josiah brought revival to Judah only after the forgotten Book of the Law was rediscovered and obeyed. The transformation began not with new strategies but with renewed reverence for God’s Word.
The blessing of honouring Scripture is immeasurable. God’s Word provides wisdom for life’s decisions, comfort during suffering, strength in temptation, correction for errors, and hope for the future. It transforms the mind, guards the heart, and equips you for every good work.
Today, determine that God’s Word will occupy the first place in your life. Do not merely own a Bible, study it, meditate on it, obey it, and live by it. The cost of neglecting God’s Word is too great, but the rewards of delighting in it are eternal.
Action Plans
- Establish a consistent daily schedule for reading, meditating on, and obeying God’s Word without exception.
- Memorize key Scriptures each week and apply their principles to your daily decisions and relationships.
- Measure every belief, decision, and opportunity against the truth of God’s Word before acting.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 126: GRANT US SELF-CONTROL
Grant us, O Lord, a heart that’s true,
To follow Your ways in all we do.
In moments of trial, give strength to stand,
And guide our hearts with Your mighty hand.
O Spirit, fill us, make us whole,
With self-control to guard our soul.
May we reflect Your love and grace,
As we seek to know Your face.
When passions rise and temptations call,
May Your peace be our shield through it all.
Help us to choose Your righteous way,
And trust in Your word, day by day.
In every step, let Christ be seen,
A life of purity, calm, and serene.
Empowered by grace, we humbly choose,
To honour You in all we do.
Grant us, O Lord, a heart that’s kind,
With self-control, Your peace we find.
Forever faithful, we will be,
As You lead us to victory.
