Bible Text: Romans 12:1
1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.
Luke 9:23 “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
A goldsmith places gold into the fire, not because he wants to destroy it, but because he wants to remove impurities and reveal its true value. The fire is uncomfortable, but the process produces something more precious. Sacrifice in the life of a believer is not meant to ruin us; it is God’s process of refining our faith, strengthening our character, and preparing us for greater purpose.
Sacrifice means giving up something valuable for something more valuable. Every meaningful achievement requires a price. Athletes sacrifice comfort for excellence, farmers sacrifice time and labour for harvest, and believers sacrifice worldly desires to pursue God’s will. The kingdom of God operates by the principle of sacrifice.
The price of sacrifice is the willingness to place God above personal comfort, ambitions, and desires. Many people desire God’s promises but avoid the process that leads to those promises. However, throughout the Scripture, those who fulfilled divine assignments paid a price. Abraham sacrificed his comfort by leaving his homeland and obeying God’s instruction. Moses sacrificed personal privilege to identify with God’s people. The disciples sacrificed their careers and possessions to follow Jesus. Above all, Christ gave Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.
Sacrifice is not always about material things. Sometimes God requires the sacrifice of pride, unforgiveness, distractions, sinful habits, or personal plans that compete with His purpose. True sacrifice demonstrates love and commitment. Where there is no willingness to sacrifice, there is often limited spiritual growth.
God does not overlook sacrifices made with a sincere heart. Every prayer offered, every act of service rendered, and every decision to obey God carries eternal significance. The sacrifices we make for God are seeds that produce spiritual rewards.
A believer who understands sacrifice will not complain when obedience becomes difficult. Instead, they recognize that every sacrifice creates room for God’s greater purpose. The cross came before the crown; the wilderness came before the promised land; and surrender came before divine fulfilment.
Action Plans
- Surrender anything that prevents deeper commitment to Him.
- Give your time, gifts, and resources to advance God’s kingdom.
- Follow God’s instructions even when they require personal sacrifice.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 51: SS & S 235: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE,
My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine ;
Now hear me while I pray ;
Take all my guilt away ;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine.
May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire :
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be—–
A living fire.
While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide :
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away ;
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.
When ends life’s transient dream—-
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll—-
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove ;
Oh, bear me safe above—-
Today’s Prayer
1. Lord help me embrace sacrifice and surrender my desires for Yours.
2. Father teach me to give willingly and honour You through sacrifice.
3. Lord bless others with grace to embrace sacrifice and follow You in Jesus name. Amen.
