The Price of Wisdom

The Price of Wisdom

Bible Text: Proverbs 4:7

7 Wisdom is supreme.
Get wisdom.
Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

Memory Verse

James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

A person travelling through an unfamiliar land needs a reliable map and a good guide to avoid dangerous paths and reach the right destination. Without guidance, even great effort can lead to the wrong place. Wisdom is like that map and guide; it helps us make decisions that align with God’s purpose and protects us from unnecessary mistakes. Wisdom is not merely knowledge or intelligence. Knowledge tells us what exists, but wisdom teaches us how to apply understanding correctly. The price of wisdom is the willingness to seek God, learn from experience, accept correction, and choose obedience over impulse. King Solomon had the opportunity to ask God for anything, yet he requested for wisdom. God honoured that request because as that wisdom enabled him to lead effectively and make righteous judgments. A wise person understands that every decision has consequences and therefore seeks divine direction.

The price of wisdom is humility. A person who believes they know everything closes the door to learning, but a humble person remains teachable. Wisdom begins when we acknowledge our dependence on God’s understanding. Wisdom requires patience because wise decisions are not always the quickest decisions. It requires prayer because human understanding is limited. It requires discipline because wisdom often demands choosing what is right over what is easy.

The Bible teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This means true wisdom starts with honouring God and submitting our lives to His principles. Without God’s guidance, human wisdom can lead to pride and confusion. Joseph demonstrated wisdom when he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and prepared Egypt for a coming famine. Solomon demonstrated wisdom when he judged difficult matters. Jesus showed perfect wisdom through His words and actions.

Wisdom protects destiny. It helps us recognize opportunities, avoid destructive choices, manage relationships, and steward blessings properly. Many problems can be avoided when you seek wisdom before making decisions.

The price of wisdom includes studying, listening, learning, and seeking counsel from godly sources. A wise person is not afraid to admit when they need guidance. God desires His children to walk in wisdom because wisdom brings clarity, stability, and understanding. When we pay the price of wisdom, we gain the ability to navigate life according to God’s purpose.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 51: SS & S 235: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE,

Stanza 1

My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine ;
Now hear me while I pray ;
Take all my guilt away ;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine.

Stanza 2

May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire :
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be—–
A living fire.

Stanza 3

While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide :
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away ;
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

Stanza 4

When ends life’s transient dream—-
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll—-
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove ;
Oh, bear me safe above—-
