Bible Text: Deuteronomy 28:1-14
1 It shall happen, if you shall listen diligently to Yahweh your God’s voice, to observe to do all his commandments which I command you today, that Yahweh your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
2 All these blessings will come upon you, and overtake you, if you listen to Yahweh your God’s voice.
3 You shall be blessed in the city, and you shall be blessed in the field.
4 You shall be blessed in the fruit of your body, the fruit of your ground, the fruit of your animals, the increase of your livestock, and the young of your flock.
5 Your basket and your kneading trough shall be blessed.
6 You shall be blessed when you come in, and you shall be blessed when you go out.
7 Yahweh will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck before you. They will come out against you one way, and will flee before you seven ways.
8 Yahweh will command the blessing on you in your barns, and in all that you put your hand to. He will bless you in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
9 Yahweh will establish you for a holy people to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and walk in his ways.
10 All the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by Yahweh’s name, and they will be afraid of you.
11 Yahweh will grant you abundant prosperity, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers to give you.
12 Yahweh will open to you his good treasure in the sky, to give the rain of your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You will lend to many nations, and you will not borrow.
13 Yahweh will make you the head, and not the tail. You will be above only, and you will not be beneath; if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God, which I command you today, to observe and to do,
14 and shall not turn away from any of the words which I command you today, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
: 1 Samuel 15:22: “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
A pilot may have excellent skills, but skill alone cannot guarantee a safe journey. The pilot must follow the instructions, signals, and established procedures guiding the flight. Ignoring those instructions because they seem inconvenient can create serious consequences. Obedience is trusting God enough to follow His instructions, even when we do not fully understand where they will lead. Obedience often becomes expensive when God’s instruction conflicts with our preferences. It may require patience, sacrifice, humility, or leaving something that you are familiar with. Yet obedience positions us within God’s purpose. Noah obeyed God by building the ark before there was evidence of the coming flood. Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave his familiar environment. The disciples obeyed when Jesus called them to leave their former occupations and follow Him.
Obedience is one of the clearest expressions of faith. It is easy to say that we trust God, but obedience demonstrates that trust through action. When God gives an instruction, our response reveals whether His will truly has authority in our lives. The price of obedience may include surrendering personal plans. Sometimes God asks us to wait when we want to move, remain silent when we want to speak, forgive when we want to retaliate, or step forward when fear tells us to remain where we are. Jesus demonstrated perfect obedience. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He surrendered His human desire to avoid suffering and submitted Himself to the Father’s will. His obedience became part of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
Obedience also requires trust. We may not always understand why God gives a particular instruction, but we can trust the One who gives it. God sees what we cannot see and understands consequences that are beyond our knowledge. Delayed obedience can become disobedience when God has clearly instructed us to act. Therefore, obedience should not only be complete but timely.
The blessing of obedience is not simply receiving something from God; it is becoming aligned with His purpose. Obedience protects us from unnecessary consequences, develops spiritual maturity, and makes us useful in God’s hands. The price may be uncomfortable, but the reward is greater: peace with God, spiritual growth, divine direction, and the fulfilment of His purpose.
Action Plans
- Listen for God’s direction: Give attention to His Word and seek His guidance through prayer.
- Act promptly on clear instructions: Do not allow fear, convenience, or procrastination to delay obedience.
- Choose God’s will over personal preference: Trust that His wisdom is greater than your own understanding.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
Today’s Prayer
1. Lord give me grace to obey Your Word completely and promptly.
2. Father remove every resistance and help me submit fully to Your will.
3. Lord give others grace to hear Your voice and obey without fear in Jesus’ name. Amen.
