Bible Text: Luke 9:23-24
23 He said to all,
“If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross,
and follow me.
24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it.
Proverbs 16:3 “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
A clay vessel cannot shape itself into the form the potter intends. It must remain soft and yielded in the potter’s hands. The potter presses, turns, reshapes, and sometimes starts a portion again until the vessel becomes useful for its intended purpose. In the same way, surrender means placing our lives in God’s hands and allowing Him to shape us according to His purpose. Surrender is more than giving God our problems; it is giving Him control. It means releasing our plans, ambitions, fears, and desires and trusting His wisdom above our own. The price of surrender can be difficult because human nature often wants to remain in control.
Abraham surrendered his familiar environment when God called him to journey into an unknown future. Mary surrendered her personal plans to accept God’s assignment. Jesus surrendered completely to the Father’s will. The price of surrender is releasing the illusion that we can control everything. There are circumstances we cannot change, outcomes we cannot predict, and seasons we cannot accelerate. Surrender teaches us to place these things in God’s hands.
Surrender does not mean becoming passive or abandoning responsibility. Instead, it means doing our part faithfully while trusting God with the outcome. We plan, work, pray, and obey, but we recognize that ultimate control belongs to God. Many times, our greatest struggle is not with God’s plan but with our attachment to our own plan. We may know what God is asking but hesitate because His direction requires us to leave something familiar. Surrender calls us to trust Him beyond our comfort zone.
Jesus demonstrated the highest example of surrender when He submitted Himself completely to the Father’s will. His surrender was costly, but it accomplished God’s greater purpose. Surrender also produces peace. When we stop trying to control every outcome, we make room for faith. We discover that God can accomplish things beyond our human ability. A surrendered heart becomes easier for God to direct. Instead of constantly asking God to bless our plans, we begin asking Him to lead our lives according to His plans.
The price of surrender may be the release of control, but its reward is divine direction, peace, purpose, and deeper fellowship with God. God cannot fully direct a life that refuses to yield. When we place ourselves in His hands, He can shape our character, redirect our steps, and use us for His glory.
Action Plans
- Surrender your plans to God: Present your ambitions and decisions before Him in prayer.
- Release the need for control: Trust God with outcomes you cannot determine or predict.
- Follow His direction: Be willing to change course when God reveals a better path.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
