Text: 2 Kings 2:1–7
1. And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.
5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
LET THE TRUTH DO ITS WORK
Memory Verse: Acts 2:37 “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’”
We often long for messages that comfort us, words that say, “You are okay,” even when we know we are not. But God loves us too much to leave us unchanged. He does not just want to make us feel better; He wants to make us whole.
When Peter preached in Acts 2, his words did not soothe, they stirred. His listeners did not applaud, they were pierced. That moment of discomfort was holy. It led them to ask the most important question anyone can ask: “What shall we do?” The Truth did what comfort never could, it called them into repentance, and thousands were saved.
Today, we often hear sermons that act like spiritual painkillers, easy to receive, but ineffective in healing. They might encourage, but they do not challenge. They might lift you up, but they do not lead you forward. Jesus did not come to give temporary relief, He came to perform deep, healing surgery on our hearts.
- Relief says, “You’re fine.”
- Truth says, “You need healing.”
- Relief hides wounds.
- Truth exposes them so they can be restored.
In 2 Kings 2:1–7, Elisha chose to stay with Elijah, walking the hard road when others turned back. His persistence led to a double portion. In the same way, we must walk closely with God, even when the truth He shows us is hard to face.
Is there an area in your life where you have been seeking comfort instead of change? Are you letting God’s truth cut deep enough to heal?
