COMMON SPIRITUAL PAINKILLERS IN TODAY’S CHURCH

Text: 2 Timothy 4:3–4

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

COMMON SPIRITUAL PAINKILLERS IN TODAY’S CHURCH

 Memory Verse: Jeremiah 6:14 “They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.”

In many churches today, there is a growing problem. Instead of helping people grow in truth and holiness, some leaders and believers are using ways that make people feel better but do not bring real change. These are called spiritual painkillers. They are messages and habits that cover up the need for repentance, obedience, and deep relationship with God.

One common painkiller is selective scripture reading. This means only sharing Bible verses that talk about blessings, peace, and joy, while avoiding the ones that speak about sin, judgment, and repentance. While God’s Word is full of hope, it also corrects us and calls us to turn from wrong ways.

Another painkiller is excessive positivity. Some messages always talk about how things will get better, how God will bless us, and how we are already enough. But they ignore the truth that pride, sin, and rebellion must be dealt with. The Bible teaches both encouragement and correction.

A third painkiller is the self-help gospel. Instead of pointing people to Jesus as Saviour and Lord, some messages offer tips for success, positive thinking, and motivation. These ideas sound good, but they often leave out the cross, repentance, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Also, there is people-pleasing leadership. Some pastors and leaders are afraid to say things that may upset people. So, they stay silent on hard topics like sin, drunkenness, sexual immorality, holiness, and eternity. They care more about keeping people happy than helping them walk in the truth.

The danger of these painkillers is real. They numb spiritual sensitivity. The more people hear only soft messages, the more they avoid the truth that brings healing. Over time, they can become addicted to positivity and resistant to correction. But God wants us to be healed, not just comforted. Real healing comes through the truth, truth that convicts, corrects, and leads to repentance. The church must return to preaching the full counsel of God’s Word, not just the parts that feel good.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 2; SS&S 621: ” I GAVE MY LIFE FOR THEE”

  1. 1. I gave My life for thee ;
    My precious blood I shed,
    That thou might’st ransomed be,
    And quickened from the dead.
    I gave My life for thee :
    What hast thou given for Me ?2. I spent long years for thee
    In weariness and woe,
    That an eternity
    Of joy thou mightest know.
    I spent long years for thee :
    Hast thou spent one for Me ?

    3. My Father’s home of light,
    My rainbow-circled throne,
    I left for earthly night,
    For wanderings sad and lone.
    I left it all for thee :
    Hast thou left aught for Me ?

    4. I suffered much for thee—-
    More than thy tongue can tell,
    Of bitterest agony—-
    To rescue thee from hell.
    I suffered much for thee :
    What canst thou bear for Me ?

    5. “And I have brought to thee,
    Down from My home above.
    Salvation full and free,
    My pardon and My love.
    Great gifts I brought to thee :
    What hast thou brought to Me ?”

    6. Oh, let thy life be given,
    Thy years for Him be spent ;
    World-fetters all be riven,
    And joy with suffering blent.
    Bring thou thy worthless all :
    Follow thy Saviour’s call.

Today’s Prayer

  1. 1. Lord, give me courage to hear and speak Your full truth, even when it is hard.
  2. 2. Father, help me reject false comfort and seek genuine healing through Your Word.
  3. 3. Jesus, guard my heart from pleasing people more than You and grant me boldness to follow You.
