THE GOSPEL IS SURGERY, NOT SEDATION

THE GOSPEL IS SURGERY, NOT SEDATION

Text: Jeremiah 23:28-32

28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream;  and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.   What is the chaff to the wheat?  saith the LORD.   29 Is not my word like as a fire?  saith the LORD;  and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?  30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.   31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.   32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness;  yet I sent them not, nor commanded them:  therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.

THE GOSPEL IS SURGERY, NOT SEDATION

Memory Verse:  Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Someone with a deep infection inside the body and the doctor only gives them medicine to make them feel less pain but never treats the infection, the sickness will spread, and they could die. But a good doctor will not just ease the pain. They will open the wound, clean it out, and treat it, even if it hurts for a while. That pain leads to true healing.

This is what the Gospel does. It is not just a comfort pill to make us feel better. It is spiritual surgery. The Gospel does not just help us forget sin; it saves us from it. It does not cover wounds with a bandage. It opens them, cleans them with truth, and then heals them with grace.

Many preachers today only offer “spiritual sedation.” They preach messages that keep people calm and happy, even when their souls are in danger. It is like giving someone a pillow in hell’s waiting room. It feels nice, but it leads to death. But the true Gospel speaks the truth even when it is hard to hear. It warns us about sin. It makes us uncomfortable. It opens our hearts and shows us what needs to change. Yes, it hurts, but it also heals.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…” Swords do not just pat you on the back, they cut. But in God’s hands, that sword is a tool of healing. Like a surgeon’s knife, it cuts away the sin and sickness in your soul so that you be made whole. The Gospel is powerful. It is not meant to put you to sleep. It is meant to wake you up and lead you to life. If you only want to feel good and not corrected, you will remain sick inside. But if you allow God’s Word to do surgery in your heart, you will find real freedom, peace, and healing.

Let’s not settle for sedation. Let’s choose surgery, because real change comes when the truth cuts, cleans, and heals.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 125: ” GENTLE SPIRIT, FILL MY HEART” By Apostle James Abache

    1. Gentle Spirit, fill my heart,
With Your peace that will impart,
Calm and love, a healing light,
Guide me through the darkest night.

    Refrain:
    Gentle, gentle, Lord, I pray,
Guide my steps along Your way.
With Your love and tender grace,
Let me reflect Your holy face.

    1. When I face the trials of life,
Help me bear the pain and strife,
      In each moment, gentle still,
Lead me to Your perfect will.
    1. Teach me patience, teach me care,
To be kind and always fair,
May my words, both soft and true,
Bring Your peace in all I do.

    Bridge:
In my heart, let gentleness reign,
With Your Spirit, free from pain,
May I share Your perfect peace,
As Your love will never cease.

    Outro:
    Gentle Spirit, come and stay,
    Lead me gently every day.
In Your love, my soul will rest,
For with You, I am blessed.
