SPIRITUAL PAIN IS NECESSARY

SPIRITUAL PAIN IS NECESSARY

Text: Proverbs 3:11–12

11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD;  neither be weary of his correction:  12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth;  even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

SPIRITUAL PAIN IS NECESSARY

Memory Verse:    Acts 2:37 “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’”

Pain is often seen as something bad, something we should avoid. But in real life, pain is important. If you touch a hot stove, the pain makes you pull your hand away quickly, saving you from serious harm. Without that pain, you might not know that something is wrong. The same is true spiritually. Spiritual pain is what we call conviction, is the soul’s way of saying, “Something is not right.” It is an alarm from the Holy Spirit, warning you that sin, disobedience, or a cold heart is growing inside. Instead of avoiding this pain, we need to listen to it.

In 2 Kings 2:1–7, Elijah was on his last journey before being taken to heaven. Elisha, his follower, knew something big was coming. He felt the sorrow, the tension, the weight of what was happening. But he did not run away or try to ignore it. He stayed close, fully present. He allowed himself to experience the discomfort, and because of that, he was ready. Elisha received Elijah’s mantle, a symbol of his calling and power. If he had numbed his heart, he might have missed it.

In Acts 2, Peter preached a powerful message after the Holy Spirit came. He did not try to sound soft or polite. He spoke the truth boldly, and the people were “cut to the heart.” That pain, the deep conviction they felt, led them to ask, “What must we do to be saved?” Because they felt the sting of truth, they opened their hearts to healing. Thousands were saved that day.

Conviction may be like pain, but it is a good pain. It does not come to shame you, but it comes to wake you up, to turn your heart back to God. Just like a doctor press on a sore spot to find the source of an illness, the Holy Spirit presses on areas of our lives that need healing.

Do not have to silence conviction. Do not numb it with distractions, false comforts, or easy messages. Lean on it. Let it drive you to prayer, to change, and to Jesus. That pain is not your enemy, it is a gift that leads to healing, freedom, and deeper spiritual strength.

Pain that brings you closer to God is better than peace that keeps you far from Him.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 74: ” O SPIRIT, DRAW US NEAR By Apostle James Abache

1. O Spirit, draw us near, we pray,

Convict our hearts, and show the way,

To Christ, our Savior, Lord, and King,

Who makes our broken souls to sing.

Your gentle voice, our hearts to sway,

To see our sin and turn away.

Refrain:

O Holy Spirit, come and fill,

Our hearts with grace, our lives fulfill.

Through You, we’re born anew in Christ,

In You, we find our joy, our life.

2. In depths of sin, we once did lie,

But You, O Spirit, heard our cry.

You breathed in us a new desire,

To live in holiness, inspired.

With grace, You sealed us, firm and true,

A pledge of love that sees us through.

3. O Spirit, sanctify our soul,

And make us like the One made whole.

Empowered by Your strength, we stand,

To spread the Word across the land.

Equip us, Lord, to boldly share,

Your truth and love, Your hope and care.

4. We thank You, Spirit, for Your grace,

For drawing us into His embrace.

By You, we live, by You, we stand,

Forever held in Jesus’ hand.

O Holy One, our hearts we raise,

To worship You, our Savior’s praise.
