Text: John 8:31-32
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free
TRUTH THAT HURTS, THEN HEALS
Memory Verse: Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
A doctor who finds an infection in the body of a client is to tell the client the truth, but if instead he gives the client painkillers and says, “he will feel better soon.” He might leave his office feeling okay, but the infection keeps growing. One day, it gets worse, and then it becomes harder to treat. The doctor’s silence did not help the client rather it harmed him.
This is what happens when we avoid speaking hard truths to our spiritual lives. In Acts 2:37, when Peter preached after the Holy Spirit came, he did not hide the truth. He told the people that they had sinned by rejecting Jesus. The Bible says they were “pricked in their hearts” it hurt. But that pain made them ask, “What shall we do?” That question led them to repentance and salvation. The pain of the truth became the door to their healing.
Today, many are afraid to preach or speak the truth clearly. We avoid talking about sin, repentance, or the danger of hell. We don’t want to offend anyone, so we give “spiritual painkillers,” positive messages, sweet words, or half-truths that make people feel good but do not deal with the real problem. These messages are like spiritual anesthesia. They numb the heart but do not cure the disease. They give temporary relief, but the soul remains sick. Just like in medicine, avoiding the truth can make the condition worse. God’s Word was never meant to only comfort you; it was meant to change you. Yes, it brings peace, but it also cuts through lies, pride, and sin. That cutting truth may hurt at first, but it is always meant to heal.
We must learn to love the truth, even when it is hard to hear. And we must be willing to speak it with love, even when it may sting. A loving doctor tells the truth to save your life. In the same way, true preaching and honest counsel must expose what is wrong so that God can make it right.
Do not be afraid the truth that hurts. It is the truth that heals
Covenant Gate Hymnals 1; SS&S 1167: ” BE THE MATTER WHAT IT MAY, ALWAYS SPEAK THE TRUTH“
1. Be the matter what it may, always speak the truth;
Whether at your work or play, always speak the truth
Never from this rule depart, grave it
deeply on your heart,
Written ’tis upon your chart :
” Always speak the truth ! ”
2. There’s a charm in honesty, always
speak the truth ; speak the truth ;
There is meanness in a lie; always
He is but a coward slave, who, a present
pain to waive,
Stoops to falsehood; then, be brave;
Always speak the truth.
3. When you’re wrong, the folly own,
always speak the truth;
There’s a triumph to be won, always
speak the truth ;
He who speaks with lying tongue adds
to wrong a greater wrong;
Then, with courage true and strong,
Always speak the truth.
