Text: 2 Timothy 4:2–3
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
THE PAIN WE FEAR, THE TRUTH WE NEED
Memory Verse: Hebrews 12:11 “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
Nobody likes pain. Whether it is in the body or in the heart, pain is something we all try to avoid. When we feel sick or hurt, some people often take medicine to ease the pain. Painkillers help us rest and function. From small headaches to big surgeries, painkillers give relief. But they do not fix the real problem, they only hide it for a while.
If someone has a serious illness and only keeps taking painkillers without going for real treatment, the illness will get worse. The pain might go away for a short time, but the disease is still growing inside. Sooner or later, the truth must be faced, and real healing must happen.
This is also applicable to our spiritual lives. Many people go to church or listen to messages that make them feel better. These messages are like spiritual painkillers. They speak only of blessings, success, or comfort, but never deal with sin, repentance, or heart change. They make people feel good for a while, but the deep issues in their lives remain untouched.
These kinds of messages do not lead to healing. They give temporary peace but not lasting freedom. A sinner may feel encouraged but still live in sin. A lukewarm Christian may feel okay but stay stuck, never growing. The truth is: spiritual healing comes when you allow God’s Word to touch the painful places in your heart. True preaching brings more than comfort, it brings correction, transformation, and healing. It may hurt at first, just like surgery does, but it brings real change. God does not just want to make us feel better; He wants to make you whole.
You must not be afraid of spiritual pain. Sometimes, the truth is like a cut, but it is a cut that heals. Like a doctor who cuts to remove infection, God uses the truth to cleanse and restore you. The pain you fear is often the doorway to the truth you need. Do not settle for spiritual painkillers. Ask God for truth, even when it is hard to hear. Only then will you truly be healed, free, and whole.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 128: ” HAVE THINE OWN WAY, LORD!” By Adelaide A. Pollard
- 1. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Thou art the potter,
I am the clay.
Mold me and make me
after thy will,
while I am waiting,
yielded and still.2. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Search me and try me,
Savior today!
Wash me just now, Lord,
wash me just now,
as in thy presence
humbly I bow.3. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Wounded and weary,
help me I pray!
Power, all power,
surely is thine!
Touch me and heal me,
Savior divine!4. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Hold o’er my being
absolute sway.
Fill with thy Spirit
till all shall see
Christ only, always,
living in me!
