SELF-CONTROL AS A KEY TO LIVING A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN LIFE

SELF-CONTROL AS A KEY TO LIVING A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN LIFE

Text:  Hebrews 12:1-2

1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

SELF-CONTROL AS A KEY TO LIVING A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN LIFE

Memory verse: 2 Timothy 1:7 “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”

Self-control is essential to living a victorious Christian life. It is like being an athlete in training. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul compares the Christian life to a race: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
In a race, athletes train hard, deny themselves comforts, and focus on the finishing line. In the same way, we must practice self-control to live for Christ and stay focused on what truly matters.

In training for a marathon, the athlete must follow the strict routine of eating right, exercising, and getting enough rest. This discipline may not always be easy, but it helps them build the strength and endurance needed for the race. Self-control in the Christian life means making choices that honour God, even when it is difficult. It means saying “no” to distractions or temptations and saying “yes” to what will bring us closer to God.

Apostle Paul goes on to explain that he does not “run aimlessly” or “fight like a boxer beating the air.” Instead, he says, he “strikes a blow to his body and makes it his slave” to keep himself disciplined. This means he controls his actions and desires, not letting them control him. He does this to stay focused on his goal, just as an athlete stays focused on winning the race.

Self-control is not just for your personal benefit. It also helps you fulfill your calling and witness to others. When you live with discipline, others can see Christ in you, and you become effective in spreading His message. The reward for this discipline is an eternal prize, a life with Christ forever.

In the Christian race, self-control helps you stay focused, resist distractions, and endure trials, leading you to the ultimate prize: eternal life with God.
