THE ENDURING POWER OF SELF-CONTROL

THE ENDURING POWER OF SELF-CONTROL

Text: 2 Peter 1:5-7

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

THE ENDURING POWER OF SELF-CONTROL

Memory verse: Proverbs 25:28 “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”

Self-control is more than just a good habit or something to admire; it is a powerful tool that shapes your life.. Self-control is like a steering wheel in a car. Just as a steering wheel helps guide a car on its journey, self-control helps to guide you through life, helping you make wise decisions and avoid danger. It is not only about making good choices but also about following God’s path and resisting temptations that lead you away from His will.

In the same way that a driver needs to pay attention and keep their hands on the steering to stay on course, you need to actively work on developing self-control. However, self-control is not something you can do on your own. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Just as a driver trusts the car’s features to support their journey, you should trust the Holy Spirit to guide you, helping you make choices that align with God’s will and reflect His character.

Self-control is important in many areas of life, such as managing desires, emotions, relationships, and temptations. It is like having a toolbox with all the right tools to handle life’s challenges. With self-control, you are better able to handle difficult situations, stay calm during emotional moments, and maintain peace in your relationships. It is a sign of spiritual maturity, helping you live in a way that shows others, God’s love and wisdom.

When you consistently surrender to the Holy Spirit, you grow in self-control and become more like Christ. This transformation leads you to a victorious life, full of purpose and fruit. As you develop self-control, you reflect God’s work in the world, showing others how to live according to His will. Just as a car needs the right driver to reach its destination, you need self-control and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose for your life and to spread His love.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 56: SS&S 187: JESUS, THINE ALL-VICTORIOUS LOVE

    1. Jesus, Thine all-victorious love

    Shed in my soul abroad ;

    Then shall my heart no longer rove,

    Rooted and fixed in God.

    1. Oh that in me the sacred fire

    Might now begin to glow !

    Burn up the dross of base desire,

    And make the mountains flow.

    1. Thou, who at Pentecost didst fall,

    Do Thou my sins consume ;

    Come, Holy Ghost, for Thee I call;

    Spirit of Burning, come !

    1. Refining Fire, go through my heart,

    Illuminate my soul ;

    Scatter Thy life through every part,

    And sanctify the whole.

    1. My steadfast soul, from falling free,

    Shall then no longer move,

    While Christ is all the world to me,
