Text: Luke 3:1-10
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
THE TRUTH THAT CUTS THROUGH RELIGION
Memory Verse: Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
John the Baptist was not afraid to speak the truth. In a time when people were used to soft religious words and empty rituals, John’s preaching came like a fire. In Luke 3:7 He called the people “a generation of vipers”. That was not a gentle greeting. It was a serious warning. He told them plainly that God’s judgment was coming, and only true repentance could save them.
Many of the Jews were proud of being descendants of Abraham. They thought that their family history made them right with God. But John told them in Luke 3:8 that, “God can raise up children of Abraham from these stones” In other words, your background does not matter if your heart is far from God. Religion without repentance is emptiness. John’s words were sharp. They did not make people feel comfortable. They made them feel convicted. His message was not about doing more religious things; it was about real change from the heart. He said, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance” That means if you are truly sorry for your sins, your life will show it. You will live differently.
This message cut through the crowd like a sword. It exposed their pride, their sin, and their false sense of safety. But that was exactly what they needed. And instead of turning away, they responded with a powerful question: “What shall we do then?”. That question shows that they were truly moved. They did not just hear the message, they felt it. They knew something had to change.
John answered them by giving simple, practical ways to live out repentance. Share with those in need. Be honest. Be content. Stop cheating and stealing. Repentance is not just words, it is action. Today, we still need preaching that cuts through religion and leads to real change of heart. We need the truth, not just comfort. We need to be asked: Are we just religious, or are we truly repentant?
Let John’s bold message stirs your heart. Let it lead you to ask, “What shall I do?” And may the Holy Spirit guide you to a life that bears fruit for God.
