Text: Luke 3:7-8
7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
SPIRITUAL SURGERY: WHEN THE WORD TOUCHES THE ROOT
Memory Verse Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
When John the Baptist preached in the wilderness, his message did something powerful. It did not just speak to the mind or make people feel good for a moment. Instead, it went straight to the conscience, the deep part of a person that knows right from wrong. John’s words did not flatter people or entertain them. They did not make anyone feel proud or comfortable. His message was meant to disrupt and awaken.
John was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus. But he is also a model for all ministers and believers today who want to prepare people’s hearts for Jesus’ return. His voice called people to step out of their comfort zones. He called them out of empty religion, corruption, and spiritual pride. His message demanded real change, a turning away from sin to righteousness. John’s secret was not his personality or popularity. It was not because he was a good speaker or had many followers. His power came from the truth of God’s Word, carried by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit made that truth like a sharp knife, cutting through excuses and hard hearts.
This is what spiritual surgery looks like. It is not gentle or soft. It is a deep, healing cut that removes what is harmful inside us. Like a doctor who removes infected tissue to save a patient, the Word of God removes sin and false beliefs to save our souls. When the Word touches the root of sin and pride, it brings pain, but it also brings life. It exposes the real problem and opens the door for healing and new growth. That is why many people resisted John’s message at first, it was too sharp and too real.
Today, the Holy Spirit still works through the Word to perform this spiritual surgery. We should not be afraid of the pain that comes with it. Instead, we should welcome it, knowing that God is cutting away what harms us and making us new.
Like John, may we all speak and live the truth boldly, trusting the Spirit to pierce hearts and prepare the way for Jesus.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 2; SS&S 621: I GAVE MY LIFE FOR THEE
-
- I gave My life for thee ;
My precious blood I shed,
That thou might’st ransomed be,
And quickened from the dead.
I gave My life for thee :
What hast thou given for Me ? - I spent long years for thee
In weariness and woe,
That an eternity
Of joy thou mightest know.
I spent long years for thee :
Hast thou spent one for Me ?
- My Father’s home of light,
My rainbow-circled throne,
I left for earthly night,
For wanderings sad and lone.
I left it all for thee :
Hast thou left aught for Me ? - I suffered much for thee—-
More than thy tongue can tell,
Of bitterest agony—-
To rescue thee from hell.
I suffered much for thee :
What canst thou bear for Me ? - “And I have brought to thee,
Down from My home above.
Salvation full and free,
My pardon and My love.
Great gifts I brought to thee :
What hast thou brought to Me ?” - Oh, let thy life be given,
Thy years for Him be spent ;
World-fetters all be riven,
And joy with suffering blent.
Bring thou thy worthless all :
Follow thy Saviour’s call.
- I gave My life for thee ;
Today’s Prayer
-
- Lord, cut away my pride and sin with Your powerful Word, renewing my heart completely.
- Holy Spirit, empower me to speak the truth boldly, guiding others toward genuine repentance.
- God, awaken many hearts to receive Your Word deeply and respond with true change..
