Text: Ezekiel 18:21–23
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
THE HEART OF THE RESPONSE: TRUE REPENTANCE
Memory Verse: James 4:8 “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
A patient who visits the doctor after feeling sick for a long time and the doctor runs some tests and finds a serious issue. The patient listens carefully, feels scared, and says, “I am so sorry I did not come earlier.” The doctor nods, but then adds, “Now that you know, you must change your lifestyle, take the medicine, and follow the treatment plan. Feeling sorry is not enough.” That’s how true repentance works.
In Luke 3:10–14, people asked John the Baptist, “What shall we do?” after hearing his strong message. John did not say, “Just say I am sorry” or “Feel bad and go home.” He gave clear, practical instructions:
- To the crowd: Share your food and clothes. True repentance ends selfishness and opens the heart to others.
- To tax collectors: Take only what is fair. Repentance changes the way we treat people, especially in business and money matters.
- To the soldiers: Do not use power to harm others and be content with your pay. Repentance reaches even into the workplace, behaviour, and attitudes.
Just like the doctor who not only gives the diagnosis but also expects action, God is looking for more than words or emotions. He wants a changed life. Repentance is not just a feeling; it is a decision to turn from sin and walk in obedience. Sometimes, we treat repentance like a bandage for a deep wound. But the Holy Spirit is not giving bandages, He is performing heart surgery. He does not just want us to feel bad; He wants to heal us from the inside out.
John the Baptist made it clear: do not hide behind religion. Do not say, “We have Abraham as our father”. Do not rely on appearances. Bear fruit worthy of repentance live out what you believe. Like a patient who truly wants to get well, we must hear God’s diagnosis and respond with full surrender. That is real repentance.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642:: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
- When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
- Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
- Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
- But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
- Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
