A Deceitful Heart

A Deceitful Heart

Bible Text: Mark 7:21–23

21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Memory Verse:

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

A faulty mirror gives a distorted reflection, causing a person to believe they look different from reality. No matter how often they look, the image remains misleading. A deceitful heart distorts truth, making wrong appear right and error seem acceptable. The danger is not just in being wrong, but in confidently believing you are right.

A deceitful heart is one of the most dangerous conditions of the human life because it operates internally and subtly. According to Jeremiah 17:9, the heart is “deceitful above all things,” meaning it can mislead its owner. It can justify sin, minimize wrongdoing, and resist correction while presenting a false sense of righteousness. This condition leads to self-deception. You may sincerely believe you are on the right path while drifting away from the truth. The deceitful heart filters reality through personal desires, emotions, and biases rather than through God’s Word. It can excuse attitudes, defend wrong actions, and ignore conviction.

One major danger of a deceitful heart is that it hides its own condition. Unlike visible problems, deception works quietly. It blinds judgment, weakens discernment, and makes correction difficult to accept. This is why many people remain in error, not because the truth is unavailable, but because their hearts reject it.

However, God provides a solution. His Word is the standard of truth that exposes deception and restores clarity. When a believer submits their heart to the Scripture and remains open to correction, the light of the truth begins to reveal hidden errors and realign the heart.

A sincere and humble heart is the antidote to deception. When a person becomes honest before God, willing to be corrected, and eager to walk in truth, the grip of deception is broken. A deceitful heart must therefore be continually examined. Without intentional alignment with God’s Word, it will naturally drift into error. But with humility, truth, and obedience, the heart can remain pure, sincere, and rightly aligned with God.

Action Plans

  • Submit your thoughts and decisions daily to the authority of God’s Word.
  • Invite honest correction from the Scripture and spiritually mature, godly counsel regularly.
  • Practice daily self-examination with humility, allowing God to search and correct your heart.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 79: “THE WELLS OF HIS PROVISION”

By Apostle James AbacheIsaac, in faith, did dig the wells,
His father’s legacy,
The waters flowed, a gift of life,
From God’s abundance free.
The enemy, with wicked hand,
Tried to block the flow,
But Isaac knew that God would bring
His blessings here below.

Refrain:
What a sure and steadfast hope,
God’s provision will not cease,
From His riches in glory,
He will grant us perfect peace.
We will dig and find the flow,
Of living waters pure and bright,
God’s promises are faithful,
And He will lead us to the light.

The wells were filled with earth and stone,
The enemy’s cruel strife,
But Isaac’s trust in God alone,
Brought forth the spring of life.
Through trials fierce and opposition,
His faith would not depart,
For God, who promised to provide,
Would never break His heart.

Though famine came and all seemed lost,
The wells would still remain,
For God’s eternal faithfulness,
Will ever break the chain.
The wells of life, they are restored,
To those who seek His face,
For God, who is our faithful guide,
Will always make a way.

Outro:
Praise the Lord for wells that flow,
With living water free,
For in His grace, we shall abide,
And His provision see.
