A Defiled Heart

A Defiled Heart

Bible Text: Mark 7:20–23

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Memory Verse:

Titus 1:15 “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.”

Dirty lenses distort vision. No matter how clear the environment is, a person wearing stained lenses will see everything as blurred or contaminated. The problem is not the world around them but the lens through which they are viewing it. A defiled heart distorts perception, affecting how a person thinks, judges, and responds to life. A defiled heart is a heart that has been polluted by sin and ungodly influences. According to Titus 1:15, when the heart is defiled, even the mind and conscience are affected. This means that judgment becomes impaired, and the ability to discern truth is weakened.

Jesus explained in Mark 7:20–23 that what defiles a person comes from within the heart; evil thoughts, immoral desires, and wrong intentions. This shows that defilement is not merely external; it originates internally and then expresses itself outwardly in behavior. A defiled heart gradually loses sensitivity to righteousness. What once seemed wrong may begin to feel normal. This is how spiritual compromise grows through repeated exposure to sin and acceptance of wrong influences. Over time, the heart becomes less responsive to conviction and more comfortable with impurity.

Defilement also affects decisions. When the heart is not pure, choices are influenced by distorted desires rather than truth. This leads to poor judgment, unstable direction, and spiritual weakness.

The solution is purification. God cleanses the heart through His Word, His Spirit, and a surrendered life. When you intentionally renew your mind with the Scripture and stays in God’s presence, the heart is gradually purified and restored. Guarding the heart is essential. What you allow into your life; through media, relationships, and thoughts, shapes the condition of your heart. A disciplined and intentional lifestyle helps maintain purity.

A pure heart restores clarity, strengthens discernment, and aligns you with God’s will. When the heart is clean, perception becomes accurate, and decisions become sound. A defiled heart must therefore be cleansed continually. As purity increases, spiritual sensitivity is restored, and you begin to walk in truth and clarity.

Action Plans

  • Avoid corrupt influences and guard what you allow into your mind and environment daily.
  • Renew your mind consistently with God’s Word to maintain clarity and spiritual purity.
  • Stay in God’s presence through prayer and worship to keep your heart aligned with Him.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 46: SS & S 585: JESUS CHRIST, GROW THOU IN ME

Jesus Christ, grow Thou in me,
And all things else recede !
My heart be daily nearer Thee,
From sin be daily freed.Each day let Thy supporting might
My weakness still embrace;
My darkness vanish in Thy light,
Thy life my death efface.

In Thy bright beams which on me fall
Fade every evil thought ;
That I am nothing, Thou art all,
I would be daily taught.

More of Thy glory let me see,
Thou Holy, Wise, and True !
I would Thy living image be,
In joy and sorrow too.
Fill me with gladness from above,
Hold me by strength Divine :
Lord, let the glow of Thy great love
Through my whole being shine.

Make this poor self grow less and less,
Be Thou my life and aim ;
Oh, make me daily through Thy grace
More meet to bear Thy name !
