Text: Proverbs 2:1–5
1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
Memory Verse: 1 Kings 3:9 “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad…”
A radio can only receive a signal when it is properly tuned to the right frequency. If the frequency is wrong, the signal becomes noisy and the message is lost. The human heart must be tuned to God in order to hear His voice clearly. A listening heart is one that is attentive, quiet, and receptive to God’s guidance.
When Solomon became king, he recognized the weight of responsibility before him. Instead of asking God for wealth, long life, or power, he asked for a hearing heart, one that could listen and discern rightly. This request pleased God because it demonstrated humility and dependence on divine wisdom.
A listening heart is essential for spiritual growth. God speaks through His Word, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and through godly counsel. However, if the heart is distracted by pride, noise, or personal ambition, it becomes difficult to recognize His direction.
Listening to God requires attentiveness and humility. It means slowing down, creating space for prayer and reflection, and allowing the Scripture to shape your understanding. A listening heart is not only eager to hear God’s voice but also willing to obey what He says.
When you cultivate a listening heart, you gain wisdom, discernment, and spiritual clarity. You begin to recognize God’s guidance in everyday decisions and develop confidence in following His will.
God still speaks today, and those who develop a listening heart are able to receive His instruction and walk wisely.
Action Plans
- Set aside regular quiet time to listen to God through prayer and Scripture.
- Reduce distractions that prevent you from recognizing God’s voice.
- Practice immediate obedience when God reveals His guidance.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 131 Break the Chains, O Lord (Tune: Amazing Grace) By Apostle James Abache
From darkness into day;
Break every chain and set us free,
And guide us in Your way.
Break the chains, O Lord, we pray,
And drive all fear away;
By Your blood we overcome,
And walk in endless day.
Are silenced by Your Word;
Through Jesus’ blood we overcome,
Our victory is secured.
For Christ has won the fight;
The grave is torn, new life is born,
We walk as children bright.
Prayers
- Father, give me a listening heart that is sensitive to Your voice.
- Lord, grant me wisdom and discernment to understand and follow Your guidance.
- Father, awaken listening hearts in my family and community so they may hear and follow Your truth.
