A Lustful Heart

A Lustful Heart

Bible Text: Matthew 5:27–30

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Memory Verse:

Matthew 5:28“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

A small spark can burn down an entire forest if it is not quickly extinguished. What begins as something seemingly insignificant can grow into something destructive and uncontrollable. Lust often starts subtly in a thought, a glance, or an unchecked desire, but if left unaddressed, it can spread and damage a person’s spiritual life, relationships, and integrity. A lustful heart is a heart dominated by impure desires. Jesus, in Matthew 5:27–30, makes it clear that sin is not only an outward act but begins within the heart. This means purity is not merely about behavior, it is about the condition of the inner life. A person may appear disciplined outwardly yet struggle inwardly if the heart is not purified.

Lust corrupts gradually. It begins in the mind, settles in the heart, and eventually manifests in actions. It distorts perception, reduces people to objects, and weakens spiritual sensitivity. Over time, it creates distance between the believer and God, because impurity clouds spiritual clarity and dulls conviction. A lustful heart also feeds on what it is exposed to. What you consistently watch, listen to, and dwell on shapes your desires. This is why guarding the heart is essential. If the inputs are pure, the heart remains healthier; if the inputs are corrupt, the heart becomes vulnerable.

The solution is not suppression but transformation. God purifies the heart through His Word, His Spirit, and a surrendered life. As the heart is filled with truth and strengthened through fellowship with God, impure desires lose their control. Discipline and intentional choices are also necessary. Avoiding environments that trigger temptation, renewing the mind with the Scripture, and staying accountable help maintain purity. A heart aligned with God will increasingly desire what is right and reject what is harmful.

A pure heart brings clarity, strength, and intimacy with God. When the heart is clean, life follows.

Action Plans

  • Guard your eyes, thoughts, and media intake to prevent impure influences from entering your heart.

  • Fill your heart daily with God’s Word to renew your mind and strengthen purity.

  • Avoid environments, habits, and relationships that trigger temptation or weaken your spiritual discipline.
