A Proud Heart → Sustains Blindness

A Proud Heart → Sustains Blindness

Bible Text: Proverbs 16:18–19

Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor,
than to divide the plunder with the proud.

Memory Verse:

James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

A cup already filled completely cannot receive additional water until it is emptied first. A proud heart believes it already possesses complete understanding, preventing truth, wisdom, and correction from entering successfully. A proud heart is one of the strongest forces sustaining spiritual blindness. Pride convinces people that they are already right, spiritually mature, or sufficiently knowledgeable, making them resistant to correction, instruction, and divine revelation. Because proud people trust their own understanding excessively, they often fail to recognize their spiritual condition honestly. The Bible repeatedly warns about the dangers of pride. Pride leads people toward destruction because it separates them from humility, teachability, and depending on God. A proud heart struggles to admit mistakes, acknowledge weakness, or accept correction sincerely. As a result, spiritual blindness continues and often increases gradually.

Pride blinds faster than ignorance because ignorant people may remain teachable and willing to learn. Proud people, however, believe they already possess sufficient understanding. This attitude blocks spiritual growth and prevents deeper revelation from God. Pride creates self-deception by convincing people they see clearly while remaining spiritually blind. One major result of pride is inability to learn. Proud people often reject counsel, ignore warnings, and resist godly instruction. Instead of seeking truth sincerely, they defend personal opinions and justify wrong attitudes or actions. Such resistance weakens discernment and limits spiritual maturity.

Pride also leads to rejection of truth. When God’s Word confronts sinful attitudes or wrong perspectives, proud hearts often become defensive instead of repentant. This resistance gradually hardens the heart and deepens spiritual darkness. Self-deception is another dangerous result of pride. Spiritually proud people may appear confident outwardly while remaining disconnected from genuine spiritual understanding. Without humility, they become vulnerable to deception, wrong decisions, and spiritual decline.

However, God gives grace to the humble. Humility opens the heart to wisdom, correction, and spiritual insight. A humble believer recognizes dependence on God and remains teachable before Him. Jesus demonstrated humility perfectly and submitted Himself to the Father’s will. we must follow His example by rejecting pride and embracing humility sincerely.

Action Plans

  • Practice humility daily through teachability, repentance, obedience, and sincere dependence on God.
  • Welcome correction gladly instead of defending wrong attitudes, opinions, or sinful behaviours.
  • Seek God’s wisdom above personal understanding, pride, reasoning, and self-confidence.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 26: SS&S 1149: GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD,

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon a little child ;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.

Fain I would to Thee be brought;
Blessed Lord, forbid it not ;
In the Kingdom of Thy grace
Give a little child a place.

Lamb of God, I look to Thee ;
Thou shalt my example be ;
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild ;
Thou wast once a little child.

Fain I would be as Thou art ;
Give me Thy obedient heart ;
Thou art pitiful and kind,
Let me have Thy loving mind.

Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
In Thy gracious hands I am ;
Make me, Saviour, what Thou art,
Live Thyself within my heart.
