A Wise Heart

A Wise Heart

Text: 1 Kings 3:6-9

6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

Memory Verse: Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

A skilled builder carefully plans before laying the foundation of a house. Every measurement and decision is made with wisdom so that the structure will stand strong for many years. Without wise planning, the building may become unstable. A wise heart guides a person to make decisions that lead to a stable and meaningful life.

A wise heart understands life from God’s perspective. It recognizes that life on earth is temporary and that every day is a valuable gift from God. In Psalm 90:12, Moses prayed that God would teach people to “number their days.” This means learning to live with awareness that time is limited and should be used wisely.

A wise heart seeks guidance from God rather than relying solely on human understanding. It listens carefully to God’s Word, reflects on His truth, and applies His principles to everyday life. Wisdom is not merely knowledge; it is the ability to use knowledge in a way that honors God.

Such a heart also exercises discernment. It distinguishes between right and wrong, truth and error, and what is temporary versus what has eternal value. Because of this, a wise heart makes choices that lead to spiritual growth, peace, and lasting impact.

Developing a wise heart requires humility and teachability. Those who acknowledge their need for God’s guidance become open to learning from His Word, from wise counsel, and from life’s experiences. When you live with a wise heart, your priorities become clearer. You invest your time, energy, and resources in things that truly matter, faith, character, relationships, and service to God.

A wise heart therefore enables you to live thoughtfully, purposefully, and in alignment with God’s will.

Action Plans

  • Ask God daily for wisdom in your decisions and priorities.
  • Study and apply the teachings of the Scripture to guide your choices.
  • Reflect on how you use your time and focus on what has eternal value.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

  1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
  2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
  3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
  4. But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
  5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
