BALANCING GRACE AND TRUTH

BALANCING GRACE AND TRUTH

Text: Romans 2:1-4

 1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest:  for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself;  for thou that judgest doest the same things.   2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.   3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?  4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering;  not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

BALANCING GRACE AND TRUTH

 Memory Verse:        John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The Doctor works with two tools: one that brings comfort and one that brings healing through surgery. If he only uses the comfort tool, the patient may feel better for a short time, but the real sickness remains. On the other hand, if he uses only the sharp tool without care or kindness, the patient may be too afraid to even accept help. A good doctor uses both: comfort and care, truth and treatment.

This is how we must share God’s message, with grace and truth. Some people preach only grace. They speak about love, hope, and blessings. That is important, but if they never speak about sin, repentance, or the need to change, it is like giving a patient a painkiller and ignoring the disease. This kind of message may feel good, but it does not heal the heart. It is a spiritual placebo, comfort without a cure.

Others preach only truth, without pointing to the sin, calling for repentance, but without love or mercy. This can be harsh and even push people away. Truth without grace becomes a heavy burden instead of a path to healing. Jesus did not choose one over the other, He brought grace and truth together. In John 1:14, it says Jesus came “full of grace and truth.” He spoke kindly to sinners, but He also told them to “go and sin no more.” He forgave the woman caught in adultery, but He did not ignore her sin. He showed love and called for change.

As believers in Christ, we must do the same. Yes, preach hope. Yes, share words of encouragement. But never forget to also speak the truth especially to those who have not known Christ. Let them feel the sting of conviction, because that pain can wake up their hearts. Like the people in Acts 2:37, who were “cut to the heart” after hearing Peter’s bold message, they asked, “What shall we do?” That question opens the door to transformation.

Do not just numb the pain. Lead people to healing. Give them the truth with love and grace with honesty. That is the balance that changes lives, not just for now, but forever.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 1; SS&S 1167:” BE THE MATTER WHAT IT MAY, ALWAYS SPEAK THE TRUTH“

1. Be the matter what it may, always speak the truth;

Whether at your work or play, always speak the truth

Never from this rule depart, grave it

deeply on your heart,

Written ’tis upon your chart :

” Always speak the truth ! ”

2. There’s a charm in honesty, always

speak the truth ; speak the truth ;

There is meanness in a lie; always

He is but a coward slave, who, a present

pain to waive,

Stoops to falsehood; then, be brave;

Always speak the truth.

3. When you’re wrong, the folly own,

always speak the truth;

There’s a triumph to be won, always

speak the truth ;

He who speaks with lying tongue adds

to wrong a greater wrong;

Then, with courage true and strong,

Always speak the truth.

Today’s Prayer

  1. 1. Lord, help me speak Your truth boldly and lovingly, just as Jesus did with others.2. Father, fill my heart with grace so I can correct others gently, not harshly.

    3. Lord, may others receive both Your truth and grace, leading them to repentance and true freedom.
