Text: 1 John 1:5–7
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
CALL TO RENOUNCE DARKNESS
Memory Verse: 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
The Christian journey demands total commitment. God makes it clear that no one can serve two masters or walk with one foot in light and the other in darkness. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “What fellowship has light with darkness?” The two cannot coexist. Just as night and day do not shine together, so also you must choose where to stand.
God detests lukewarmness. In Revelation 3:15–16, Christ rebukes the church in Laodicea, saying, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot… because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Lukewarm faith is compromise, half committed to Christ, half entangled with the world. This dangerous state blinds people to their need for repentance and keeps them vulnerable to the enemy’s deception.
To renounce darkness, the first step is repentance, a turning away from sin with godly sorrow and a desire for change. Repentance is more than regret; it is the decision to forsake sin and follow Christ wholeheartedly.
Secondly, it means breaking off sinful habits. Hidden sins, addictions, or secret compromises create a foothold for Satan. You must consciously surrender such habits to Christ and replace them with disciplines of holiness.
Thirdly, renouncing darkness requires complete submission to Christ. Jesus is not just the Saviour but Lord. To walk in His light is to yield our will, desires, and ambitions to His authority, trusting Him for guidance.
Finally, walking away from darkness leads to a lifestyle of truth, holiness, and obedience. It is not a one-time decision but a daily practice. Choosing honesty over deceit, purity over compromise, and obedience over rebellion keeps the believer firmly in the light of God’s glory.
Renouncing darkness is not achieved by human strength alone but by the power of the Holy Spirit. As we abide in Christ through prayer, study of the Word, and fellowship, His light grows stronger in us, and every shadow of darkness disappears.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 87 “REDEEMED FROM CHAINS OF DARKNESS” By Apostle James Abache
- From the depths of darkest night,
Where the shadows hide the light,
I was bound in chains of fear,
Held by powers far and near.
But my Savior heard my cry,
Spoke His name and set me free.
Now in His grace, I rise and stand,
Redeemed by His mighty hand.
Refrain:
I am free, I am free,
By His blood, delivered me!
No more chains, no more strife,
I am saved, and restored to life.
Hallelujah, praise the King,
From the pit, He’s called me out to sing!
- Satan’s whispers lost their power,
In the light of that great hour,
When the Lord’s voice called me whole,
Restoring peace unto my soul.
No more torment, no more night,
I am free in His great light.
He has broken every chain,
Nevermore to be enslaved!
Bridge:
In His name, the demons flee,
At His feet, I find my peace.
Victory, forever mine,
In the blood of Christ divine!
- Now I walk in freedom’s light,
With my Savior by my side,
For the One who freed my soul,
Now leads me to a life made whole.
I’ll forever praise His name,
For He broke the devil’s claim,
And forever I will sing,
Of the One who is my King.
Today’s Prayer
