Text: Amos 8:11–12
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.
CAUSES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Neglecting God’s Word
Memory Verse: Matthew 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Spiritual famine begins when the Word of God is neglected. The Bible is the divine nourishment that sustains the believer’s spirit. Just as the body weakens without food, the soul deteriorates without the Word. When the Scripture loses its place in daily life, spiritual vitality fades, and believers become vulnerable to deception, discouragement, and sin.
In Amos 8:11–12, God warned of a time when there would be “a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.” This famine wasn’t due to God’s silence, but to the people’s neglect and disobedience. They had access to God’s truth but there was no appetite for it. Today, many live in similar conditions, surrounded by Bibles, sermons, and teachings, yet spiritually starved because they no longer value the Word as their daily bread.
Neglecting the Word leads to spiritual confusion. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” When the lamp is ignored, darkness fills the heart, and decisions become clouded by human reasoning. Without the Scripture as a compass, even sincere believers can drift from God’s will.
Furthermore, neglect weakens faith. Romans 10:17 says, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” When the Word is absent, faith diminishes, prayer loses fire, and worship becomes routine. A believer disconnected from the Scripture becomes like a branch cut off from the vine, incapable of bearing fruit John 15:5.
God’s Word is life-giving power. It corrects, heals, and renews 2 Timothy 3:16–17. To neglect it is to cut off the supply line of divine strength. Revival begins when believers return to the Word with hunger and humility. The cure for spiritual famine is not more entertainment or activity, but genuine return to daily study, meditation, and obedience to the Scripture.
Let every believer open their heart once again to the transforming power of God’s Word. For where His Word dwells richly, famine ends and spiritual fruitfulness begins.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
- When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
- Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
- Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
- But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
- Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
