Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
CAUSES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Rejecting the Truth
Memory Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:10 “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”
One of the major causes of spiritual famine is the rejection of the truth. When people refuse to accept or live by God’s Word, they gradually lose sensitivity to His voice. Truth is spiritual nourishment, it purifies, guides, and sustains the soul. To reject it is to choose spiritual starvation.
In 2 Thessalonians 2:10–11, the Scripture warns that those who reject the truth will be given over to deception: “For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” When men prefer comfort to conviction, and popularity to purity, God sometimes withdraws His voice and allows them to be deceived by falsehood. This is not cruelty but consequence, the famine that follows rebellion.
The Truth exposes darkness and calls for repentance. However, when hearts grow hardened, people begin to resist correction and embrace teachings that suit their desires. 2 Timothy 4:3–4 foretells this: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” Such a generation enjoys religious excitement but lacks spiritual depth.
Rejecting the truth is dangerous because truth is not just information it is a Person. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” John 14:6. To reject truth is to reject Christ Himself. When truth is silenced, error flourishes, and the Spirit of God withdraws. The result is confusion, compromise, and spiritual blindness.
This kind of famine is subtle; it doesn’t happen overnight. It begins when we stop treasuring the Word, stop obeying it fully, and start explaining away its demands. Gradually, discernment fades, and lies begin to sound like wisdom. To overcome this, we must return to a deep love for truth. Proverbs 23:23 says, “Buy the truth, and sell it not.” Truth may confront, but it also heals. It may cut, but it cleanses. Embrace it even when it hurts, for only truth sets free John 8:32.
Cultivate a heart that trembles at God’s Word Isaiah 66:2. When you love the truth, God fills you with light and restores your spiritual vision.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 30: SS&S 902: MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS
- My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
- When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
- His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay - When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne
