Text: Isaiah 59:1–4
1 Behold, the Lord‘s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
CAUSES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Unrepentant Sin
Memory Verse: Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
Unrepentant sin is one of the deepest roots of spiritual famine. Sin does not just offend God; it creates a barrier that blocks His presence and voice. When you continue in disobedience without repentance, spiritual dryness follows. The joy of salvation fades, prayer becomes empty, and divine direction ceases.
Isaiah 59:1–2 reminds us that God’s hand is not too short to save, nor His ear too heavy to hear, but sin builds a wall between man and God. It is not that God stops speaking, but that sin deafens the soul. Like clouds that hide the sun, unconfessed sin hides the light of God’s presence, leaving the spirit cold and barren.
David experienced this in Psalm 32:3–4 when he said, “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all day long.” Guilt and silence drained his strength until he confessed his sin. Only then did restoration come. Similarly, when sin remains unaddressed, it chokes spiritual life, cuts off revelation, and invites confusion. Persistent sin hardens the heart. Hebrews 3:13 warns that being “hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” leads to rebellion and spiritual blindness. Each act of disobedience dulls the conscience and distances the believer from the Holy Spirit. Over time, what once convicted the heart becomes tolerable, and that is the mark of famine.
Sin also grieves the Holy Spirit Ephesians 4:30. When the Spirit is grieved, His gentle voice becomes faint, and divine power withdraws. The result is emptiness, praying without results, serving without joy, and hearing without transformation. This is why repentance is not optional; it is the lifeline of spiritual vitality. The cure for this famine is sincere repentance and humility before God. 1 John 1:9 assures us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Restoration begins when we acknowledge our sin, forsake it, and seek cleansing through the blood of Jesus.
Beloved do not allow hidden sin to rob you of divine fellowship. The moment repentance is genuine, the famine ends and joy, peace, and intimacy with God return.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
- When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
- Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
- Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
- But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
- Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
