CONSEQUENCES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Loss of Discernment

Text: Hebrews 5:13–14

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

CONSEQUENCES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Loss of Discernment

Memory Verse: Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”

A major consequence of spiritual famine is the loss of discernment, the ability to distinguish truth from error, good from evil, and the Spirit of God from the spirit of deception. When the Word of God no longer nourishes the heart, the conscience becomes dull, and the moral line between right and wrong begins to blur.

Hebrews 5:13–14 explains that only those who are “of full age,” and who have “their senses exercised to discern both good and evil,” can walk in true spiritual understanding. Discernment grows in the soil of consistent fellowship with God and obedience to His Word. But when spiritual famine sets in, believers feed on emotions, opinions, and trends rather than divine revelation.

A heart starved of truth becomes easily deceived. In the absence of the Word, even falsehood sounds spiritual. This is why Apostle Paul warned in 2 Timothy 3:13 that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” A believer without discernment may celebrate what God condemns or condemns what God approves. In such seasons, people start confusing charisma for anointing, numbers for revival, and excitement for the presence of God. Like Samson, they may not even realize that the Spirit has departed Judges 16:20. When discernment is lost, spiritual deception thrives, and the devil takes advantage of ignorance.

Loss of discernment is like losing one’s sense of taste you can no longer tell if what you are consuming is nourishing or poisonous. Just as physical taste protects the body from eating harmful substances, spiritual discernment protects the soul from false doctrines and worldly compromise. Without it, even destructive ideologies may appear attractive.

The solution to this famine is a return to the Word and the Spirit. When the heart is filled with the Scripture, the Holy Spirit uses it as light to expose deception. Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

Guard your spiritual senses. Feed daily on God’s Word, stay prayerful, and let the Holy Spirit sharpen your perception. In a world of confusion, discernment is not optional it is survival.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 99 “FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT’S POWER”By Apostle James Abache

  1. Not with wine that leads to excess,

But with the Spirit’s power,

We surrender, Lord, our hearts,

To You each moment, hour.

Fill us, O Lord, we humbly pray,

Guide us in Your holy way,

Let Your wind blow, and we’ll obey,

Spirit, fill us every day.

Refrain:

Fill us, fill us, Holy Spirit,

Take control, we yield to You,

With each breath, we seek Your presence,

To live in all we say and do.

  1. Like a ship that seeks the breeze,

We stretch our sails to You,

Under Your guidance, let us go,

Wherever You lead us through.

Not by our strength, but by Your might,

We walk by faith, not by sight,

In Your grace, we find our light,

Spirit, fill us, make us right.

  1. To the call of the Spirit’s wind,

We choose to surrender, Lord,

In Your love, our hearts are freed,

To follow Your every word.

Guide us, lead us, as we yield,

To Your presence, our hearts sealed,

Holy Spirit, let us feel,

Your control, our lives to heal.

Outro:

Fill us, Spirit, fill us, we pray,

Lead us, guide us, every day.
