Text: Amos 8:11–12
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.
CONSEQUENCES OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: National Decay
Memory Verse: Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
One of the most devastating consequences of spiritual famine is national decay. When people turn away from God, the moral and spiritual foundations of the society begin to crumble. A nation cannot remain stable when truth, justice, and righteousness are missing. Spiritual famine affects not only individuals and churches but the entire nation.
Proverbs 14:34 makes it clear that “righteousness exalts a nation.” It lifts societies to dignity, prosperity, and peace. But when righteousness is scarce, wickedness multiplies, and corruption becomes the national culture. Laws may still exist, but without godly principles to guide hearts, justice fails. As Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” When the Word of God no longer directs the conscience of leaders and citizens, chaos fills the vacuum. In times of spiritual famine, truth becomes relative, morality becomes negotiable, and leadership becomes self-serving. Amos 8:11–12 describes a time when people would “run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord and shall not find it.” That is the picture of a nation in decay, abundance of activity but absence of divine direction.
History shows that no civilization collapses suddenly; it erodes from within when its people abandon God. The fall of ancient Israel, Rome, and many great empires began with spiritual famine when pleasure replaced purity, greed replaced gratitude, and idols replaced the living God. Today, when nations legalize immorality, silence the gospel, and celebrate sin, they invite the same decay that ruined those before them. Isaiah 1:4–7 paints a vivid image of such decline: “Ah sinful nation… the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.” When leaders lack moral vision and citizens lose godly fear, the land becomes barren, not of resources, but of righteousness. The fruit is violence, corruption, and confusion.
Yet there is hope. When a people repent and return to God, healing follows. 2 Chronicles 7:14 gives the cure: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray… then will I hear from heaven, and will heal their land.” National revival begins with personal repentance. Every believer is called to be light in the darkness, a voice of truth in a decaying generation.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 27: SS&S 173 THERE’S A LIGHT THAT IS SHINING IN DARKNESS
- There’s a light that is shining in darkness,
While we wait for the dawning of day;
And it cheers us along on our journey,
Till the shadows shall vanish away !
- So we’ll wait and watch for the dawning,
The day of eternity blest;
Then take the wings of the morning,
And fly away to our rest.
- From the sure word the prophets
have spoken, [the gloom;
There is light flashing forth through
For the Scripture can never be broken,
And the King in His glory will come.
- Now we sing ‘mid the darkness and shadows, ;
And we pray and we watch for the dawn
Till the Day-star, in glory arising,
Shall betoken the coming of morn.
His Second Coming
- We are not of the night nor of darkness,
Let us walk, then, as children of day;
Our weeping shall be for a moment,
And our joy shall ne’er vanish away !
Today’s Prayer
- Lord, have mercy on our nation; forgive our sins and restore the fear of God in our leaders and citizens.
- Father, raise righteous voices and reformers who will rebuild our nation on the foundation of truth and justice.
- Lord, visit every nation suffering moral and spiritual decay; send revival that will turn hearts back to You and heal the land.
