14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNICATION: Maturity and Growth in Hearing God
Memory Verse: 1 Peter 2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”
Spiritual maturity is essential for accurately hearing and discerning God’s voice. Hearing God clearly is not only a gift but also a skill that develops over time through consistent practice, obedience, and spiritual growth. Just as physical senses become sharper with use, spiritual perception becomes stronger when you regularly engage in prayer, Scripture study, and obedience to God’s guidance.
Spiritual perception develops as believers learn to recognize how God communicates. At first, His guidance may seem subtle or difficult to distinguish. However, as you grow in relationship with God, His voice becomes more familiar and easier to recognize. Each act of obedience strengthens spiritual sensitivity, while ignoring God’s guidance can weaken spiritual clarity.
Spiritual perception develops with practice and obedience. Mature believers learn to distinguish between God’s voice, human reasoning, emotional impulses, and deceptive influences. This maturity brings confidence, stability, and accuracy in spiritual decision-making. Growth in discernment protects you from deception and helps you remain aligned with God’s will.
Spiritual maturity is like training the ear to recognize a familiar voice in a crowded place. At first, it may be difficult, but with repeated exposure, recognition becomes natural and immediate. Consistent fellowship with God strengthens spiritual recognition.
Spiritual growth is a continuous process. As you remain faithful and obedient, your ability to hear and discern God’s voice increases, bringing greater clarity, peace, and confidence.
Action Plans:
Practice daily prayer and Scripture meditation.
Obey God’s guidance promptly.
Remain consistent in spiritual discipline to strengthen discernment.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
Prayers:
Father, help me grow in spiritual maturity and discernment.
Lord, train my spirit to recognize Your voice clearly.
Holy Spirit, strengthen my ability to hear and obey You always.
