DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNICATION: The Fruit Test

DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNICATION: The Fruit Test

Bible Text: Galatians 5:22–23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Memory Verse: Matthew 7:16 “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?”

The fruit test is a key principle for discerning the source of spiritual communication. Fruit refers to the visible results, effects, and outcomes produced by a message, influence, or guidance. Every spiritual communication produces fruit over time, and that fruit reveals its true origin. God’s messages produces life, peace, righteousness, and spiritual growth, while false or deceptive messages produces confusion, fear, bondage, and spiritual instability.

God’s voice leads to life, holiness, and freedom. When God speaks, His message strengthens faith, promotes obedience, and brings peace and clarity. It draws you closer to Him and aligns your life with His truth. God’s voice never leads to sin, confusion, pride, or spiritual bondage. Instead, it produces spiritual health, maturity, and freedom.

In contrast, counterfeit communication and messages produces negative fruit. It may create fear, anxiety, confusion, pride, or disobedience. Even if it appears attractive at first, its long-term result reveals its false source. This is why you must observe the spiritual fruit of any message rather than relying only on how it feels.

The fruit test is like identifying a tree by what it produces. A healthy tree produces good fruit, while a diseased tree produces bad fruit. The fruit reveals the true nature of the source. Discernment grows as you consistently observe spiritual fruit and remain grounded in God’s Word. Over time, it becomes easier to recognize what originates from God and what does not.

Action Plans:

  • Observe the long-term fruit of spiritual guidance.
  • Compare outcomes with God’s Word.
  • Follow only what produces peace, righteousness, and spiritual growth.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

  1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
  • Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
  • Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
  • But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
  • Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey

Prayers:

  1. Father, help me recognize spiritual truth by the fruit it produces.
  2. Lord, lead me only in paths that produce life and holiness.
  3. Holy Spirit, train me to discern and follow Your voice faithfully.
