Text: : Psalm 42:5–7
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
HUMAN & NEUTRAL CHANNELS; Emotions
- Memory Verse: Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”Emotions are a natural part of human life and serve as a channel that communicates inner conditions such as joy, fear, peace, sorrow, or excitement. God created emotions as part of the human design, and they play an important role in expressing the condition of the heart. Psalm 42 shows that emotional expression before God is valid. The writer openly expressed discouragement yet directed his hope toward God. This demonstrates that emotions can be brought honestly before God in prayer and worship.
Emotions communicate condition, but they do not determine truth. Emotions reveal how a person feels, but they do not always reflect reality or divine truth. Feelings can change based on circumstances, thoughts, or external influences. For example, fear may appear even when God is present, and discouragement may occur even when God is working. Therefore, emotions must be submitted to God’s Word rather than used as the final authority for decision-making.
God may use emotions to alert you to your inner condition, but spiritual truth must always come from God’s Word and the Holy Spirit. Mature believers learn to recognize emotional signals without allowing emotions to control their actions. When emotions are aligned with God’s truth, they support spiritual growth. When uncontrolled, they can create confusion or instability.
Emotions are like a temperature gauge. They reveal the current condition but do not control the environment. They provide information, but decisions must be based on the truth, not feelings.
Action Plans:
- Acknowledge emotions honestly in prayer before God.
- Test emotional impulses with the Scripture.
- Allow God’s truth, not feelings, to guide decisions.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642:: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
- When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
- Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
- Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
- But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
- Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
Today’s Prayer
- Father, help me submit my emotions to Your truth and authority.
- Lord, stabilize my heart and remove emotional confusion.
- Holy Spirit, guide me to walk by truth, not by feelings in Jesus’ name. Amen.
