Text: 1 Samuel 3:1–10
1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4 That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6 And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Israel in the Days of Eli: When the Word Was Rare
Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 3:1 “And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.”
In the days of Eli, Israel experienced a deep spiritual famine, not of food or water, but of divine revelation. The Word of the Lord was rare, and there was no open vision. This silence from heaven was not accidental; it was the consequence of corruption in the priesthood and moral decay in the nation. When spiritual leaders grow cold and compromise the truth, God withdraws His voice, leaving the people in darkness.
Eli was a priest who once heard from God, but over time, his spiritual sensitivity dimmed. His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were also priests, defiled the altar through greed, immorality, and disrespect for holy things. They turned worship into exploitation. Though Eli knew of their sins, he failed to correct them firmly. As a result, the lamp of God in the temple began to flicker, a symbol of Israel’s fading spiritual light. When leadership becomes corrupt, the people lose direction. Proverbs 29:18 declares, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The absence of divine guidance leads to confusion, compromise, and chaos. God’s silence is often His judgment, not because He stops speaking, but because hearts become too hardened to listen.
Yet even in that darkness, God raised a young boy Samuel who would restore His voice to the land. Samuel’s call in 1 Samuel 3:10 reminds us that divine revelation returns where there is humility, obedience, and a listening heart. While Eli’s generation grew cold, Samuel’s hunger for God opened a new era of prophetic revival.
The story of Eli warns us that spiritual famine begins when the fear of God fades. When the altar is defiled, worship becomes routine, and ministers prioritize position over purity, heaven withdraws. The cure is repentance and a return to holiness. God still seeks men and women like Samuel, sensitive to His voice, faithful to His Word, and willing to carry His message in a corrupt generation.
Action Plans:
- Guard spiritual leadership with integrity, holiness, and reverence for God’s altar.
- Cultivate a listening heart that responds promptly to God’s voice.
- Reject compromise and restore reverence for God’s Word and presence.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 99 “FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT’S POWER”By Apostle James Abache
-
- Not with wine that leads to excess,
But with the Spirit’s power,
We surrender, Lord, our hearts,
To You each moment, hour.
Fill us, O Lord, we humbly pray,
Guide us in Your holy way,
Let Your wind blow, and we’ll obey,
Spirit, fill us every day.
Refrain:
Fill us, fill us, Holy Spirit,
Take control, we yield to You,
With each breath, we seek Your presence,
To live in all we say and do.
- Like a ship that seeks the breeze,
We stretch our sails to You,
Under Your guidance, let us go,
Wherever You lead us through.
Not by our strength, but by Your might,
We walk by faith, not by sight,
In Your grace, we find our light,
Spirit, fill us, make us right.
- To the call of the Spirit’s wind,
We choose to surrender, Lord,
In Your love, our hearts are freed,
To follow Your every word.
Guide us, lead us, as we yield,
To Your presence, our hearts sealed,
Holy Spirit, let us feel,
Your control, our lives to heal.
Outro:
Fill us, Spirit, fill us, we pray,
Lead us, guide us, every day.
