JOHN’S STAND, OUR CHALLENGE

JOHN’S STAND, OUR CHALLENGE

Text: Isaiah 58:1-3

1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

JOHN’S STAND, OUR CHALLENGE

Memory Verse: Mark 6:18 “For John had been saying to Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’”

A doctor who works far from the city, in a simple, quiet rural clinic is not trying to impress anyone. He is not there to win awards or please wealthy donors. His goal is clear: to save lives. He tells patients the truth, even when it is hard. If a patient has a serious illness, he does not hide it with kind words, he confronts it, then offers the cure. That doctor is like John the Baptist. John’s ministry took place in the wilderness, away from the noise of culture and power. He was not dressed like the religious leaders. He did not live in luxury. He was not backed by politicians. Instead, he lived close to God, and that gave his voice weight. Like the rural doctor, John was not after popularity. He was after healing the soul.

Today’s culture is like a fancy hospital that hides the truth to keep patients comfortable. Many preachers are tempted to dress up the gospel to fit modern tastes, softening sin, avoiding hard truth, and skipping repentance. They offer motivational messages instead of spiritual medicine. But people do not need flattery; they need the truth that will set them free.

Just as John warned King Herod about his sin, even at great personal risk, so too must today’s Christians speak truth, even when it is not popular. The wilderness represents a place of separation from worldly thinking. We may not have to live in the desert, but we must learn to live differently. This means:

  • Rejecting lies that the world celebrates
  • Calling out compromise in ourselves and others
  • Valuing faithfulness over fame
  • Preaching repentance, not just inspiration

John’s message shook people. It was not because he had the best presentation, it was because he had the power of truth. That same power is needed today. The world does not need a comfortable message. It needs spiritual doctors who will diagnose sin honestly and then lead people to Jesus, the true cure. Like John, we are called not to impress the world, but to prepare it.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642:: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

  1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

  1. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

  1. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey

  1. But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey

  1. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey

Today’s Prayer

  1. Lord, give me courage to speak truth with love, even when it’s unpopular or hard.
  2. Help me live a set apart life, rejecting compromise and following Your voice in today’s culture.
  3. Father, awaken others to seek truth over trends, and to boldly walk in righteousness.
