KATANUSSO: A PIERCING THAT CHANGES YOU

KATANUSSO: A PIERCING THAT CHANGES YOU

Text: 2 Corinthians 7:9-10

9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

KATANUSSO: A PIERCING THAT CHANGES YOU

Memory Verse: Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

In Acts 2:37, the Bible says the people were “pricked in their hearts” after Peter’s sermon. The Greek word used there is katanusso and it helps us understand what also happened in Luke 3:10, when John the Baptist preached and the crowd asked, “What shall we do then?

The word katanusso is made of two parts:

  • Kata means “down” or “deeply” deep down, something strong and intense.
  • Nusso means “to stab” or “to pierce.”

So katanusso means a deep stabbing, not in the body, but in the heart. It was a spiritual piercing, like a sword that goes straight into the soul. It does not just make someone emotional; it cuts through pride, exposes sin, and wakes the spirit. This piercing is not like a motivational speech or a feel-good talk. It was more like spiritual surgery. It does not stay on the surface. It goes under the skin of religion. It reaches behind the smiles and rituals. It opens the heart and shows what is inside. When John the Baptist preached in the wilderness, people were not simply impressed, they were katanusso-ed. His message cut through their false security and comfort. He did not care about popularity or applause. He preached repentance with fire. He told them their family name; being Abraham’s children was not enough. He told them to bear fruit that proves their repentance.

And what happened? The people responded with the same cry we hear in Acts 2: “What shall we do?” That is the cry of someone pierced by truth. That is the beginning of real change.

This kind of piercing does four things:

  • Goes beyond religious masks
  • Reveals hidden sin
  • Breaks dead habits
  • Demands real action

Katanusso is a gift from God. It means the heart is still soft. It means God’s Word is still reaching us. Today, we need that same piercing in our churches, our families, and our own hearts. We need preaching and truth that does not just comfort but transform. Only then will we truly ask, “What shall we do?” and allow God to change us.
