SELF-CONTROL IN HANDLING CONFLICT AND ANGER

SELF-CONTROL IN HANDLING CONFLICT AND ANGER

Text: Ephesians 4:26-27

26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

27 Neither give place to the devil.

SELF-CONTROL IN HANDLING CONFLICT AND ANGER

Memory verse: Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Self-control is like having strong brakes on your car. When you are driving fast and something suddenly appears in your path, good brakes help you stop safely. In the same way, when someone says something hurtful or a conflict starts, self-control helps us stop our words or actions before we make things worse.

Proverbs 15:1 teaches us this truth clearly: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” In putting out a small fire, if you pour water (a gentle answer) on it, it goes out. But if you throw petrol (a harsh word), the fire grows quickly. When we use calm, kind words in a heated moment, we can stop the fire of anger from spreading.

Jesus is our perfect example. When He was insulted, hurt, and falsely accused during His trial and death, He didn’t fight back. 1 Peter 2:23, says: “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate… He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” Jesus did not shout, threaten, or get revenge. He had full power to do so, but He trusted God and stayed calm. That is true strength.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be like Him. When someone offends us or speaks badly to us, we can choose to react in two ways. We can explode like a volcano, or we can stay steady like a mountain. Self-control helps us stay steady. It helps us respond with patience and wisdom instead of anger and revenge.

Anger itself is not always a sin. Even Jesus got angry when people were doing wrong in God’s house. But He did not let the anger control Him. He used it in the right way. That is the difference. Let’s ask God daily to help us control our tempers and tongues. When we feel heat rising inside us, we can take a deep breath, pray, and let God guide our response. With self-control, we do not just avoid fights, we also show others the peace and power of Jesus living in us.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 125: GENTLE SPIRIT, FILL MY HEART By Apostle James Abache

    1. Gentle Spirit, fill my heart,
With Your peace that will impart,
Calm and love, a healing light,
Guide me through the darkest night.

    Refrain:
    Gentle, gentle, Lord, I pray,
Guide my steps along Your way.
With Your love and tender grace,
Let me reflect Your holy face.

    1. When I face the trials of life,
Help me bear the pain and strife,
      In each moment, gentle still,
Lead me to Your perfect will.

    1. Teach me patience, teach me care,
To be kind and always fair,
May my words, both soft and true,
Bring Your peace in all I do.

    Bridge:
In my heart, let gentleness reign,
With Your Spirit, free from pain,
May I share Your perfect peace,
As Your love will never cease.

    Outro:
    Gentle Spirit, come and stay,
    Lead me gently every day.
In Your love, my soul will rest,
For with You, I am blessed.
