Bible Text: Matthew 13:13–15
Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don’t see, and hearing, they don’t hear, neither do they understand.
In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says,
‘By hearing you will hear,
and will in no way understand;
Seeing you will see,
and will in no way perceive:for this people’s heart has grown callous,
their ears are dull of hearing,
they have closed their eyes;
or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their heart,
and would turn again;
and I would heal them.’
Memory Verse:
Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
A window does not create light; it only allows light to pass through. If the window is clean, light enters freely. But if it is blocked with dirt, darkness remains inside. The heart determines whether spiritual light is received or resisted. Spiritual blindness is deeply connected to the condition of the heart. It is not merely an inability to understand spiritual truth; it is often the result of a heart that has become hardened, distracted, prideful, or resistant to God. The Bible consistently reveals that spiritual perception is determined largely by the heart’s condition. Jesus explained that many people could hear His words and see His miracles yet still fail to understand spiritually because their hearts had become dull and insensitive. God was speaking clearly, but their hearts were not positioned properly to receive the truth. This reveals an important spiritual principle: spiritual blindness is not just an eye problem, it is a heart problem.
When the heart becomes hardened through sin, pride, unbelief, bitterness, distractions, or continual disobedience, spiritual sensitivity decreases gradually. A hardened heart resists conviction, ignores correction, and loses discernment. As spiritual light is resisted repeatedly, blindness increases and understanding becomes darkened. On the other hand, a humble and surrendered heart welcomes divine revelation. God reveals truth to those who remain teachable, repentant, obedient, and spiritually hungry. A healthy heart allows the light of God’s Word and Spirit to brighten our understanding clearly.
The condition of the heart affects every area of spiritual life, including discernment, prayer, obedience, worship, and relationship with God. A pure heart recognizes God’s voice more easily and responds sincerely to His direction. Jesus emphasized inward transformation because outward religion without heart change cannot produce true spiritual sight. God desires hearts that are soft, humble, and responsive to His truth.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 26: SS&S 1149: GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD,
Look upon a little child ;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.
Fain I would to Thee be brought;
Blessed Lord, forbid it not ;
In the Kingdom of Thy grace
Give a little child a place.
Lamb of God, I look to Thee ;
Thou shalt my example be ;
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild ;
Thou wast once a little child.
Fain I would be as Thou art ;
Give me Thy obedient heart ;
Thou art pitiful and kind,
Let me have Thy loving mind.
Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
In Thy gracious hands I am ;
Make me, Saviour, what Thou art,
Live Thyself within my heart.
