Text: Amos 8:9–14
9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:
10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.
13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
SPIRITUAL FAMINE
Memory Verse: Amos 8:11 “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”
Famine is a severe lack of nourishment, a condition where what sustains life is missing. Just as the human body wastes away without food, the spirit and soul also decay when deprived of divine nourishment. Humanity is a three-part being, spirit, soul, and body and each part requires its own form of sustenance to remain alive and healthy.
The body depends on physical food and water for strength. God provided for this in Genesis 1:29: “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
But the spirit and soul are not earthly; they come from God and therefore feed on what comes from heaven. The Word of God, prayer, worship, and fellowship are their divine nourishment. When a soul turns away from God, it opens itself to corrupted “food” from the enemy, worldly philosophies, immoral entertainment, and deceitful pleasures, all of which poison rather than strengthen.
Jesus declared in John 6:51: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever.” Christ, the Word made flesh John 1:1, is the true food of the spirit. To feed on His Word is to partake in eternal life and renewal.
Even music can be spiritual food. Godly songs inspire the soul, lift faith, and stir worship, they feed the inner man. But worldly music, filled with lust, pride, and rebellion, becomes toxic nourishment from the devil’s table. The kind of music that stirs your soul reveals who is feeding you. God designed us for both personal devotion and fellowship. When you connect, share, and encourage one another, your spirit becomes mutually nourished. Spiritual health grows where there is exchange of godly values, prayer, and love.
However, Amos warned of a coming time when men would wander from sea to sea searching for God’s word and not find it Amos 8:12. That is spiritual famine when the Word of the Lord becomes rare, when hearts grow cold, and when divine direction ceases.
Nothing is darker than a life where God is silent. If His Word no longer stirs your heart or His Spirit no longer speaks, it is time to seek Him urgently. For man can survive some time without bread but not without the Word of God, the true bread of life.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
- When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
- Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
- Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey
- But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey
- Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey
