Text: 2 Timothy 4:3–4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
SPIRITUAL PAINKILLERS: COMFORT THAT DELAYS THE CURE
Memory Verse: Jeremiah 6:14 “They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.”
For illustration purpose, permit me to use the example of a doctor and his patient. Someone with toothache need a dentist, but if you take a painkiller every day. The medicine will only help you for a while to eat, sleep, and smile without too much pain. But deep down, the problem is still there. Maybe it is a cavity or an infection. If left untreated, it can grow worse, even dangerous. The painkiller did not fix the problem. It only made you feel better for a short time.
In the same way, many of us handles spiritual pain, guilt, fear, emptiness, or struggles. Instead of facing the root of the issue, we sometimes look for quick spiritual relief. We go to church, hear comforting messages, good songs and music, and walk away feeling a little better. But the real issue in our heart has not changed.
These are what I can call spiritual painkillers. They give temporary comfort, but they do not lead to true healing. Real spiritual healing comes when you let God show you what is wrong and allow Him to fix it. That might mean conviction, repentance, or facing painful truths about yourself. It is not always easy, but it leads to real peace.
Some messages today in churches focus only on encouragement, success, and motivation. These are not bad in themselves, but when they replace the truth, they become like medicine that numbs the pain but hides the disease. A message that never challenge you to change or turn away from sin may be comforting but will not heal you. God does not want you to stay stuck in pain or in sin. He wants you healed and whole. But that healing requires honesty, surrender, and trust in His process. Just like a good doctor may need to perform surgery to save a life, God may need to confront you with the truth before He can restore you fully.
Let’s not settle for just feeling better. Let’s seek the real cure. Let’s ask God to help you face what needs to be fixed, not just masked. His goal is not to make you temporarily comfortable but eternally transformed. True healing starts when we stop covering the pain and start allowing God to cure the cause.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 128: ” HAVE THINE OWN WAY, LORD!” By Adelaide A. Pollard
- 1. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Thou art the potter,
I am the clay.
Mold me and make me
after thy will,
while I am waiting,
yielded and still.2. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Search me and try me,
Savior today!
Wash me just now, Lord,
wash me just now,
as in thy presence
humbly I bow.3. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Wounded and weary,
help me I pray!
Power, all power,
surely is thine!
Touch me and heal me,
Savior divine!4. Have thine own way, Lord!
Have thine own way!
Hold o’er my being
absolute sway.
Fill with thy Spirit
till all shall see
Christ only, always,
living in me!
